Re: Stephen Colbert running for president!
Yea, Stewart is more of a shock jock in my opinion. He's only looking for the next laugh.
Colbert is more interested in presenting what's happened and illustrating how it conflicts with our political system. It's more about giving the audiene an opportunity to say, "Hey, wow, you know what, that really doesn't make sense."
That being said, I love both the Daily Show and Colbert Report the same. I think they give me a different type of laugh. But don't push aside the Colbert Report because you don't like Stewart. The two guys are very different.
Actually, I think that media gold mine would do me wonders. Here I am, an unknown running for President and now my posts on OS are all over the place. I'll be famous!"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Stephen Colbert running for president!
Stewart believes in the stuff he says and while he's always looking for a laugh there's also a hint of "OMG! Look at the stupidity of these politicians." I mean it's easy to satirize pundits the way Colbert does but it's frustrating and sad to see that every day there seems to be a goldmine of comedy out there because the "leaders" are so inept.
That being said, I like Colbert a little bit. There are times when he goes a little too far with his character and it turns into buffoonery but most of the time there's an underlying point just as there's a very obvious point when Stewart does his stuff.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

I see it as quite the opposite.

I think he's just looking for laughs more so than believing what he says."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Listen to the parts where he is actually serious and not looking for laughs. To me that makes me think he really does believe what he is saying.Comment

Re: Stephen Colbert running for president!
As for Colbert he is nothing like Stewart's humor IMO. He presents his character as a right wing conservative and constantly skewers the left wing liberals, thus making right wingers like myself love his character. But he also somewhat goes into the realm of absurdity in his right wing character which can show just how silly right wingers can be, so that makes the liberals love his character as well since he is so over the top and ridiculous with it sometimes.
Colberts "character" is really a great dynamic IMO and in many ways far more subtle, complex and intelligent than Stewart's jokes.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Stephen Colbert running for president!
I think some of you are missing the main point of Stewart and Colbert's shows. They do make fun of politicians and politics but their main satire is on THE MEDIA.
Stewart's show is a mock news show that covers the medias coverage of topics and the fact that the media piggyback and stay in line with the same topic across the board (all corporate media conglomerates).
Colbert is a parody of Bill O'Reilly and the other egomaniacs that have their own show. They distort the news and project themselves with the utmost authority on every subject even though they have little actual knowledge themselves (ie read "The Savage Nation" a book written about one man's opinions with no actual research or substance to it).
Both of their shows are not really about politics/issues as much as they are about how the American media transmits them. Stewart shows the hypocrisy very well.
Colbert for President is amusing because his name recognition would easily put him ahead of all the second tier candidates. But the average age of the primary voter is usually older than the presidential election so I don't think he will do that well. But who knows. It is funny that it is happening in the Republican party too. They have become the party of actors, sports stars and all kinds of non-average-joe types.Comment
