    Re: Who plays an instrument?

Started out playing the guitar by being taught by my grandfather. Moved on to the piano when I went to college.

    I have a nice Fender Telecaster (I believe it's a 1957) that was my grandfater's

Proud to say I played bass in bars and clubs for 20 years, doing original music on the East Coast, toured Canada, and had solid stints in London, Paris and NYC in bands no one has ever heard of...

Got attdicted to Playstation b/c I also spent most of my life in a recording studio producing demos and indi releases...

        Fun?...Hells yeah!!!

Profitable or transferable to the 'straight world'?...uh, not so mucho...

          Re: Who plays an instrument?

I've been playing bass since 4th grade.

This isn't me but it's my family band. My grandfather started this band a long time ago and is a local celebrity in New Orleans. My dad and my uncles took over and me and my cousins are thinking about taking over for them sometime. One of my cousin's is actually playing the snare for them sometimes right now:

The voice IS an instrument and the most important and versatile one of all. Also the most emotional. The rest of them are just pretty much backing for the vocals.

Ahh...I guess that's debatable. I see your point. When you hear a song and the vocals just nail it, it's almost ridiculous to hear someone else do it. In Guitar Hero 3, "Pride and Joy" sounds awful (vocally).

However, some songs are carried by an instrument and the instrument can show great emotional value.

I'd venture to say that any stringed instrument is more capable of being more emotive than the voice. There is only so much a singer can do with their voice unless they are operatically trained, and most singers trained to that degree don't have any kind of soul to their singing.

That is not to say that vocals are not emotional. They can be extremely emotional depending on the singer and context.

Vocals that really emote are the ones that are gritty, not so clean. Rock singers, soul singers, blues singers... Those are the ones who really emote well with their vocals. They just get this really sad grittiness when they need it.

Listen to SRV's version of Little Wing and tell me that that song needs vocals... The guitar is all that song needs, and it is as emotional as any song that I have EVER heard.

                              Depends on the genre.

I rather play riff-oriented/"music"-oriented stuff than those propelled by vocals. Listening habits, I'm much more diverse, but it bores me to play some forms.

Analogy time: I'll listen to Wes Montgomery or bebop, but rather play like Rahsaan Roland Kirk or Sun Ra.

Great point. I played alongside I girl that was classically trained, and while she played some songs very well, she lacked emotion and heart. She would sit upright and her face would grimmace, showing her frustration. Her hands were stiff and too mechanical. Nothing against her as a person, but she was one of the most dreadful people to play with.
