    Re: Who plays an instrument?

Bump: I think I'm searching for a needle in a haystack, but does anyone know any place not named eBay where I can purchase a Fender S-1 volume pot (i.e. a volume pot that contains the S-1 switching system, a push-button toggle which changes the pickups from series to parallel)?

Just install an SPST switch in the guitar. If you are capable with soldering iron, you can do it yourself for under $5.

Edit: Better yet, buy a push-pull pot and wire that to switch from par to series. Then it is 100% discreet.

Is there any particular item you might suggest, or will any push-pull pot do the trick? I should have mentioned I'm attempting to replace an S-1 switch rather than add a new one; the shaft of the current knob is broken and I cannot turn it or mount a plastic knob on it, but it is still functional at the moment. As such the guitar is wired for the switch already, it's just a matter of finding a replacement pot (my understanding is that I can't simply replace the shaft of the switch).

          Re: Who plays an instrument?

Well that changes my suggestion, as I've never actually seen the S-1 switching system. Lemme go see if I can find out how it works, then I'll get back to ya.

Edit: Ok.. After reading up on it, it seems just like a push-pull pot, with a different mechanism. You could probably just replace it with any push-pull. The wiring may be a little different, so you'd have to get a diagram, which I may be able to supply you. I would suggest a 500K pot.

          http://store.guitarfetish.com/pudppo25auge.html <- that is 250K

I'm not quite sure which resistance Fender uses on the S-1 switch. You will also need to buy a set of knobs from them, because the S-1 knob won't work with the new pot.

Does anyone here play saxophone? I'm just starting to learn it, so any tips for starting early on would be great. I'm pretty musically oriented, but I'm having trouble just getting the damn thing to make a consistent sound.

            Tenor sax, by the way.

Hey, I got a chance to look into it a little. I was wondering something though. In the forums over at Ultimate Guitar, I seem to recall some guys talking about being able to slow down songs through Guitar Pro so that they could learn the notes. Is that possible (to actually listen to the song and slow it down through that program)? That may be a stupid question. I's like to be able to improve my ability to listen to songs and pull out the chords and such.

I played the Drums growing up.I jammed with my brother(Guitar) and a friend from high school who played Bass for us.It was a blast, but my dedication wasn't really there and I lost intrest. Not having a job at the time to upgrade my kit and such was frustrating.Besides,I knew our chances of ever making it were slim to none.

I'm a tenor sax man. I have been playing now for 16 years and giving a few lessons now. The most difficult thing to master with a saxophone is the musicality. Early on you will be playing notes and technically playing music, but until you get a feel for it you won't really be making music. It's a difficult distinction but, IMO, it's what makes the saxophone so interesting.

Be sure to master the embouchure early. If you learn it wrong, you'll have issues for a while. If you're musically oriented, like you said, it should come to you pretty quickly. Just get a feel for it, mess around with it, and you'll get it. If you don't, let me know and I'll see if I can recommend anything for you.

Yes, but you don't get the full reproduction of the song like an mp3, it uses MIDI sound and RSE (which is not bad) to reproduce the sound of the notes. It might sound weird. There are several websites that help ear training if you want to get into it but I can't remember them at the moment.

Well after about 3-4 days I can play decently (at least in my mind). I know the C major scale and have just been tooling around with it and working on my tone. My biggest problem is getting a consistent, quality tone, especially on the initial "blow." The particular sax is about 46 years old, so it could just need some fixing up or something, but I'm not sure if its just the way I'm blowing (my embouchure) or the sax. Once I start the wind, I can get a nice sound after an initial squeak and play some nice phrases, but that damn squeak is really annoying...

Well it might be that your initial air flow is either too weak or too strong. There's a money range in there that, as is the norm for saxophone, you just gotta get a feel for. If you're really having issues you should probably have it looked at. My saxophone is about 20 years old but back when it was almost new it still needed to get looked at about yearly. I'm sure that couldn't hurt.

Ok, thanks a lot. I may need to try that out. Does it just play the midi through the program or do you need like a midi keyboard or something hooked up?

It's probably me, then. The octave key is broken so it will have to be taken in anyway, so we'll see. Thanks for the tips.

Me playing guitar and singing. Mind you, my voice was shot(recorded the vocals wayyyyyyyyyy too many times due to EQ and mic issues), so they aren't my strongest vocals. I still think it turned out pretty good. I will go back and re-do the vocals once my throat feels up to it.

                                Guitar. Not very well, though.

I'm very inconsistent in hitting the right fret or string, and I can't solo for ****. I can play lots of songs up to the solo, then I have to stop.
