Re: No Country for Old Men

Just watched this film for the eleventh time tonight. It just keeps getting better and better. I might even be so bold as to say that this may be one of the ten best films ever made. And boy am I a tough critic...

I enjoyed the movie, but seemed kinda anticlimactic at the end...All they went through between Chigurh and Josh Brolin's character and he ends up getting randomly killed easily. I dunno, just seemed too matter of fact for me.

One thing that stuck out to me was the complete lack of music. I can't recall a single note of non-diegetic music. Go watch any film regarded as scary and I promise music will precede or accompany any "shock" moment. No Country For Old Men is the complete opposite. Maybe it's just me but I think all the tension us enhanced by not having music. It relies on composition and the characters to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. I think only hearing the footsteps of Chigurh in the hallway of the hotel is one of the scariest movie movements of the last ten years or so.

Excellent point--I hadn't thought of that. According to the wikipedia page, the entire movie contains 16 minutes of music.

The Coen Brothers are the masters of their craft. I can't think of anyone else whose films I look forward to more than theirs.

How many of those minutes are the opening and end credits? Also, I do recall a car radio every now and then.

The IMDB soundtrack page shows three listings, so I'm guessing two were used in the opening and the third might have been on the radio. You got me curious. I might have to bust out the BluRay tonight.

I'm also curious, I've only seen the whole film once and that was at the theater. If you watch it, use a stopwatch or something.
