Watched it last night, if you can, get the 2 disc DVD that has the director's original vision of making the movie black and white on it. Very impressive.

Anyway, the movie was simply, in a word, AMAZING. I felt the same way the characters did and the ending was one of the better endings in a movie in a long, long time. I felt shocked, and I felt the same for and with the characters. Just amazing, I'm just sitting here blown away by this movie.

I like the fact that they kept the origin of the creatures secret and didn't delve into the other dimension and showing the military trying to contain it. It put you in the same helpless situation with the people in the grocery store not knowing why the mist is there and will it ever go away.

I think the part where you really indentify with the characters and feel like you're in the store is when:

It's night and those weird, big azz bugs start clinging to the store windows. I was like "Turn Out that damn light!! They're attracted to the light! lmao! When the predators of the bugs came and smashed the windows open, I was like "Ohh ****!"

Man, that whole scene was awesome!

For the first 90 minutes or so it was a great film. The last 2 minutes made me never want to watch it again.

First off, it went totally out of his character to do what he did at the end. There were still other options. After coming up with solutions all through the movie, to suddenly "give up" just didn't fit.

It also ticked me off that the irresponsible mom who left here 8 year old home alone with a younger child made it through fine. Why didn't she get killed in the parking lot? Why show her as making it through without any consequences for her actions? Again, it didn't make sense other than to make you feel even worse for the main character.

They made the main guy out to be somewhat of a hero for 99% of the moive, only to turn him into an evil loser at the end. I don't mind endings that are not "happily ever after" (I loved the end to the Descent), but this one made no sense.

The answer to everything you said is that the humans are the real monsters. The people criticizing the irresponsible mother are making her life just as miserable as the real monsters. Leaving her kid at home for 15 minutes is not nearly as bad as the people in the store were making it out to be.

I don't really see how the end made him into an evil loser. I can't even imagine how you came to that conclusion. He made a decision based on what the group wanted that was incredibly difficult, and ultimately the wrong decision. It was refreshing to see a movie with a realistic ending where an imperfect decision makes things even worse, despite the fact that things got better when the military cleaned up. I thought it was a perfect contrast.

Try to put yourself in the character's position and mindset. The situation was hopeless. They drove for miles surrounded by the mist and seeing the monsters walking about. They likely felt it was over and that they'd eventually be killed by the monsters. There were no signs anywhere of a possible rescue and the monsters appeared to have took over. Again....no hope. Once hope is lost, there's no reason to live.

Yeah, you could tell that he knew exactly what he was promising to do. If it was just an empty, patronizing promise that parents sometimes make to their kids, he wouldn't have looked so heartbroken.

He spent the entire movie finding ways to help everyone survive, and then he just gave up when they ran out of gas. I get the point the Director was trying to make, but he took a shortcut to get there.

I'm not sure if any of you are parents, but as one myself I can tell you there is no way that at that point I'm putting a gun to my son's head and pulling the trigger. How did people characterize Chris Benoit when he did the same. Very different situations I know (plus one is a fantasy setting the other is reality), but he is viewed as a monster for killing his own child (and rightly so). I view the character in the movie the same way, given the events preceeding that act.

As for the lady, leaving an 8 year old home alone with a younger child is irresponsilb eat best, and yet she made it through without an consequences. That I still don't get.

Man this movie was very "quieting" meaning it just humbled the viewer once it got to the end.

you go on this ride and then harsh reality sets in and there is no hope. I "hope" myself we never see something like this or that we never have to make choices like that even though they were good and humane...

When they passed underneath the 200-foot creature, it would've (reasonably) led him to believe that there was no hope, that it was the creatures' world now. Given the utter bleakness of the situation presented and the extremely likely prospect of his son being torn to shreds before his eyes, his actions aren't that unreasonable. That being said, it didn't seem to fit that he would just keep driving until the gas ran out. The novella's ending made far more sense in that regard.

This is how I felt after watching the previews.. but I'll rent it soon to see.
