    Good free anti-virus software?

My dad is buying a new computer and Best Buy is trying to sell him some anti-virus and installation package for $200. I told him I can set the computer up for him and that I think that there are some good free anti-virus programs. I've got McAfee on my computer, but it slows everything down and I hate paying for it, so when my subscription is up, I'm going to replace it.
Can anybody recommend some free (or even low cost) anti-virus/anti-spyware programs? Thanks.

I was one of the people who concurred on AVG.......then I found out I had a couple of viruses it didn't detect. So now my computer is dead and when I get back up and running I'm going with Norton.

That's weird. I've been running AVG for years without a problem.

Same here. I don't download from websites I don't know or trust, so never have any virus problems anyway, so I'm not sure how good AVG is; I've never really put it to the test.

AVG or Avast for free, doesn't hurt to augment their real-time scanning by running a full system scan using an alternative AV once a month or so.

NOD32 is excellent if you're willing to pay (very reasonable price)

I've been using AVG on my laptop and I've never had problems with it.
If your willing to spend a couple of bucks then I would suggest nod32.

Odogg why go with Norton? That's such a hog on your system. I've been using AVG ever since I had to have a full reboot of my entire CPU and then when the free Norton on my current Dell expired.

AVG, Avast, and AntiVir are some good choices out there in terms of being free
