Well I haven't run Norton for years either but I recently (last month) read a PC World analysis of the best virus and spamware protectors and they cited Norton as the best with McAfee a close second. The knock on both programs are they are resource hogs. But truth be told, after suffering through the nightmare of spamware first, then a clean install, then a virus, i'm all ready to give up resources to get some protection when I get my computer back up and running.
I always thought AVG was good too but I read that it didn't detect some viruses and I had had some suspicious activity going on on my computer so one day I ran some online scans and did some checking and sure enough, I had 2 trojan horse viruses. Stupid AVG was able to detect them when I did some tweaking but could not remove them. Every time it would say it had removed them, then i'd run a scan and they were still there. Eventually the PC o/s just corrupted and now all my computer does is endlessly reboot.
