    Modern day music classics, IYO?

Just wondering, what songs do you feel, popular or not, should be considered modern music classic? I know there are some crabby apples that feel that new music sucks and the only good music is from the 80's, but if you look hard enough, there are some GREAT bands out there.

First one I gotta recommend has probably been heard by only a handful of people here: "Stay Young" by Strata. I've pimped Strata a LOT on here, and they are my favorite band, so you may say I am biased. But, I have never heard such a moving and emotional song in my life. It's about the basic addage, 'live each day as if it's your last/don't lose your innocence', but the song is so much more. The lyrics are just stunning, and Eric Victorino's lyrical delivery is almost haunting. I seriously recommend to any fan of any genre to listen to this song (well, I recommend the whole band really, but THIS song most of all). It's the only song I have appreciated so much that I will actually change CD's in my truck at inopportune times just to hear that one song. Just listen to it, however you can.

The second recommendation I have is "Blackbird" by Alter Bridge. I know it's still new and some people can't seem to see past Alter Bridge as anything more than Creed with a new vocalist. But, they are SO much more than that, and you can see that in this song. From Myles Kennedy's emotionally powerful vocals to Mark Tremonti's rediculous guitar work, this song has it all. Clocking in at 8 minutes long, it's in the same vein as lengthy classics such as "Freebird". Yeah, I know, it's not really THAT similar to Freebird apart from the length and the bad*ss solo at the end, but you get what I mean. The whole band matured bigtime from their first CD, and it really shows in "Blackbird".

So, what do you guys think?

Don't know what definitions of modern and classic you are using, but I'd nominate the following:

-The White Stripes "Seven Nation Army"
          -Jimmy Eat World "The Middle"
          -Foo Fighters "My Hero"
-The Killers "When You Were Young"
          -Franz Ferdinand "Take Me Out"
-Green Day "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"

Basically I picked recent pop-rock songs that seem like they'd endure the test of time; I am not necessarily picking by the songs' technical musical merits.

OK, I can come up with a few:

            Tool - "AEnema"
            Tool - "Prison Sex"
            Radiohead - "Karma Police"
            Radiohead - "Nude"

What I meant and what I should have stated is what songs in this day and age are classic to YOU. Not necessarily the best known songs or anything, but songs you'll still listen to 10-20 years from now.

                  Britney Spears. No?

Surprising I think Fiest's new album is brilliant. I don't usually go to the indy type rock but its pretty good.

The whole album "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk hotel is a classic, fantastically poignant.

                      Anything by Wilco.

Everything by Drive-By Truckers from the "Southern Rock Opera" album onward.

There are more, but I'll need to think more deeply about this thread. Good topic!

Frances the Mute and Deloused in the Comatorium by The Mars Volta. Incredible albums that manage to combine salsa, funk, jazz fusion, metal, rock, and acoustic medley into one amazing sound.
