    Computer Issue

I recently purchased parts to put together my own system. I finally got all the components yesterday and assembled them. I go to push the power button and for a split second the heat sink spins for the processor chip and then nothing.

Where do I start with trying to figure out what component is causing the problem?

Hopefully it's something easy. Are you at least getting the green led on the mobo to light up when it's plugged in?

Make sure you have both power connectors attached to the mobo. Make sure the ram is seated correctly. It will click in and the 2 tabs will lock in place. Make sure the same for the vid card. Are you 100% positive you lined up the processor correctly? It would have been pretty hard to misalign and then mount the heatsink, but I guess it could happen. Are you sure you have the power button connected correctly to the mobo?

You could try booting by only connecting 1 stick of ram, the vid card, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Try the other stick if this doesn't work.

      Other things to check

Did you connect the heatsink fan to the mobo? Look in the mobo manual for the jumper that resets the CMOS, reset and make sure it's in the correct place. Make sure the ram is in the correct slots.

      possible problems

      - something isn't connected right - loose, in the wrong spot, connected backwards
      - you have a short somewhere - something is causing the mobo when turned on to immediately shut off. Recheck connections and try booting with bare minimum - mobo, cpu, heatsink, ram. If the computer actually stays on, try adding one component at a time and retrying. Could also try doing this out of the case because sometimes the mobo is touching something that could cause a short.
      - you have a faulty component - something came broke, could be the power supply, mobo, cpu, or even the ram
      - some odd incompatibility - something doesn't play well with what you have.

I think I might have figured it out but I'll have to wait until I get home to check it out for sure but I think maybe the motherboard is grounded by the case.

Documentation for the power supply says that the voltage switching is done internally...there is no switch for it.

Ok I finally got the computer to turn on and the fans spin. No beeps. But I get no picture. The monitor stays black and tells me to check the analog connection, however I am connecting via DVI.

Check the monitor itself to see if it has its own digital / analog switch. Usually an arrow in a little box on the front of the monitor.

                    Re: Computer Issue

I found a button called source and it switches between Analog and Digital and finally puts the monitor in standby mode.

I'm assuming your vid card has 2 connectors for power, did you connect both? Also if your vid card has 2 dvi connections, try the other one. I'd assume your monitor needs to be in digital mode for dvi.

I tried both dvi connections. I did not see anywhere to plug power in for the video card. When I turn on the computer the fan on the video card does spin though.

Hmm, and I assume you have it in the top pcie slot? Do you have a 2nd monitor you could try to see if it's the monitor that's bad?

Make sure the thing is fully seated on the mobo, maybe try pulling it out and reinserting it.
