    Re: Computer Issue

    Re: Computer Issue

Sounds like another short (or gremlin). Could be the hub, one of the usb pins attached to the mobo isn't on right, or just a general short on the motherboard.

If it happens again, try rebooting without the hub. If that stops it, I'd assume the hub. If it continues, then something going on on the motherboard.

I'd think usb just wouldn't work, but definitely check the usb connection on the motherboard because it's rather large allowing you to plug the usb lead in without getting all the pins in.

One thing to mention, you may already know, but when you open up the case, turn the power supply switch off, but leave it plugged in. Then touch something metal in the case before you touch anything else. Static electricity can kill components, rare, but it does happen.

Only other thing I can think of is a faulty connection on the USB port on the front of the case. If I remember correctly before restart both times I was using my Jump Drive in one of the ports out front.

Mine seemed to be the mobo shorting to the case. Looks like it is all cleared up now. Check to see if that might be happening in your situation.

Yeah, you can make sure that's wired right, and otherwise just try not using the ports in front....

Just a word of warning...if you are going to update the bios on the p5k-e, do not use the asus update program in windows. It can corrupt the bios and kill the board. You could use it and be fine, but no reason to risk it.

Follow this if you ever update the bios

                Re: Computer Issue

According to the wife the computer worked fine all day, so I think cool I'll install the tuner card. I install it and install the drivers and the computer asks for a restart. Upon restart I get the same USB device overcurrent error message. I unplug anything USB inside and outside and I still get the message. This is so very frustrating.

I need to RMA the board. How do I keep the processor protected until the new board comes in?

                    Re: Computer Issue

I'd go over all the connections one more time (I'm sure you're sick of doing this) looking for loose wires, standoffs touching the bottom of the motherboard, standoffs overtightened, connections from the front panel not connected right, bent pins, etc. Also try flexing the usb cable and try straightening it out if it isn't already.

I'd try booting without the hub, hopefully you have a ps/2 keyobard mouse or at least a usb keyboard mouse where you can try out the comp without the hub. If I had to take a wild stab in the dark, I'd blame the usb hub.

I would update the bios to the latest version 0906 following the instructions from the link I posted a few posts up.

If you are still getting the problem, and you have time and patience, I'd breadboard the thing. Take it all out, put the mobo on a piece of cadboard with 1 stick of ram, vid card, mouse/keyboard (hopefully not ones off an external hub) and cpu/heatsink attached. Turn it on, see if you can get to the bios, turn it off and repat for awhile to see if the overcurrent happens. If not, add one component at a time until you get everything back. If everything goes fine, put it back in the case and see if it happens. Hopefully you could narrow it down to the component that is causing this or figure out it's something going on in the case. If it happens on the cardboard outside the box with minimal stuff attached, I'd blame the mobo.

and if you get here, I'd think you are getting to the point where you should consider returning/exchanging the board or if you have a local computer shop, maybe seeing if they can diagnose the problem.

Put it back in the plastic clam case or an anti static bag. Failing that, just put it in a box where it would get jostled around and nothing will get spilled on it.

One last question, how many usb devices do you have attached and are they attached to the front or back panel?

I talked to a guy at Asus Tech Support and he sounded pretty confident it was a mobo issue and had to be RMA'd so I think I'll just do that.

I had one attached on the back panel. One of the last things I did was disconnect that and also disconnect the front panel from the mobo and I still got the error message.
