Re: Learning to Type
You can download free ones off of download.com. The way I learned was with chatting with chicks on aim. I even took a typing class as an easy class to take during highschool and I would beat the teacher. -
Re: Learning to Type
We were required to take a typing class in middle school, so that's how I learned. I think they used a program called "Type to Learn" or something stupid like that. I guess it worked though, because I can type pretty fast.Colorado Avalanche (NHL)

I remember when I took Keyboarding in HS and the first thing the teach said is "Unlike other classes you will take here in HS you will use this class the rest of your life". When she said it I was like yeah whatever, but she could not have been more right I sit in front of a cpu everyday now.ND Season Ticket Holder since '72.Comment

Re: Learning to Type
To be honest, my typing skills have developed twenty-fold just by typing on message boards daily. That's all of the practice I've ever needed I suppose.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: Learning to Type
I took typing in high school, I was the only guy in the class, which was pretty cool.
After the first week, the teacher blacked out every key on the keyboard and put the keyboard map on the board. That was it. I went from like 11 words a minute to close to 70 words a minute.Comment

Re: Learning to Type
Since he's basically not going to learn in school, I would advise just practicing.
If you type with two fingers then you know where the keys are. Force yourself to type the proper way. Use WPM type games online to practice your speed and improve your accuracy. No need to pay for anything or do anything dramatic.
You've got the keyboard. Just use it."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

I took typing in high school, public speaking in college. I still use both skills often to this day, at age 42. Especially typing -- all day, every day at a PC.
Plus public speaking is invaluable. I don't care what your resume looks like: No white-collar employer is going to hire you if you speak like a moron, Valley Girl or high school kid. The biggest offense I still hear all the time is people using the word "like" as a verb replacement for "said."
Example, "He was like, 'I can't believe this is happening to me,'" instead of "He said, 'I can't believe this is happening to me.'" If I'm interviewing a young candidate who speaks like that repeatedly, they're sinking fast toward the bottom of the list. "Ain't" instead of "isn't" and "them" instead of "those" also are big offenses in my book, along with repeated use of "um."
Take care,

Re: Learning to Type
The Mavis Beacon series of typing lessons was highly regarded on the PC.
Give your skills a boost with educational software. From e-books and language software to fitness apps and typing tutors, we pick the best educational tools to keep your knowledge growing.
Otherwise, just do a Google search to look for free alternatives. Sure, you'll hear about two-fingered wonders who claim they can type as fast as someone who touch-types. Those people are frauds about 99.5 percent of the time.
Take care,

Re: Learning to Type
I type around 80 WPM, but it's definitely not in the proper way. I sorta have the tradition method, but with my own little twist to it. People say I type weird all the time, but it gets the job done.Originally posted by EWRMETSMaybe the best post in OS's history.
