    80th Academy Awards

The nominations were announced early this morning. The nominees include:

    Best Picture
    Atonement
    Juno
    Michael Clayton
    No Country For Old Men
    There Will Be Blood

    Complete nominations are here: http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/oscars

Should be an interesting award show if the writers strike is still going.

Isn't "interesting award show" an oxymoron?

I haven't seen any of these movies. Of all the main categories, the only movie I've seen is Eastern Promises, and I didn't think Vigo was anything special in it.

        Re: 80th Academy Awards

I was watching Mike and Mike this morning and for a show that claims they can talk about Sports AND Entertainment they embarrassed themselves by claiming they never heard of any of the movies in the Best Movie Category with the exception of Michael Clayton. And even that they weren't 100% positive.

They should really just stick to sports or Football since 90% of their programming is about the games the past Sunday when it's a Wednesday or Thursday.

How can you watch movies and not know any of the above?
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Is it just me or is the Best Picture nominations these days getting more and more esoteric? I mean, none of those movies were big hits at all. At least in the past they'd at least slot in one "serious" film that made some big money.

I'm not sure that there is an option like that anymore though. It seems like all the blockbusters are special effects showcases that aren't really that solid of movies.

Here's a list of the top box-office earners of 2007 and there's probably only one in the top 20 that I would consider a possibility of being nominated for best picture, that being American Gangster at no. 18: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/...yr=2007&p=.htm

300 not being nominated is a travesty.

You're probably right jazzyJ but I expected American Gangster to get nominated so there you go.

I'm not surprised considering that Hollywood is heavily moving toward only putting big money on action/thriller flicks that will draw fans.

The movies with a solid story don't get enough attention in terms of marketing these days.

                  Past winners and their budget:

                  1997: Titanic ($200 million budget)
                  1998: Shakespeare In Love ($25)
                  1999: American Beauty ($15)
                  2000: Gladiator ($103)
                  2001: A Beautiful Mind ($60)
                  2002: Chicago ($45)
2003: Return of the King ($94)
                  2004: Million Dollar Baby ($30)
                  2005: Crash ($6.5)
                  2006: The Departed ($90)

That's only four of the past 10 that I'd consider big budget films.

Yeah, I thought American Gangster would get a nod, too. It was a really solid film, although not as good as the two nominees I have seen (Juno and No Country).

Also, one thing I don't like about the Oscars is a heavy reliance on recent films over older ones. Each of the films listed in the Best Movie category was released after September.

I love AG but it wasnt good enough for best picture in my opinion. Ive seen 4 of the 5 movies (Still need to see There Will Be Blood) and AG wasnt better than those 4.

I thought AG was not very good. They tried to do way too much with the time. My main "beef" with it was hiring known actors/musicians in the minor roles, which in turn ended up with giving worthless characters face time but not developing the characters. I was very disappointed by it.

But still, 0 nominations for 300 is the biggest joke I've seen aside from the snubbing of The Wire in the Emmys.

300? It was a good action flick but come on. Best Picture? Best Actor? Should have received an effects nomination but nothing else.

But I'm pretty sure the studios do that on purpose, to build award buzz for a film they think is worthy.
