    Dish Network or DirecTv ??

Which one do you prefer ???

I'm making a move to one of these in the near future but know very little about each one. I've had enough of Comcast's jacked up prices and their constant relocation of channels to higher priced tiers.

I'm planning on getting a HDTV/DVR setup so I'm wondering if you guys have any thoughts of one service versus the other.

Which one is more reliable (less outages)??

Does one have a better HDTV quality than the other??

Basically any other helpful information that you can provide that I need to factor into the equation.

Thanks in advance for the help guys.

Have had Dtv for about 5 years. before that DISH for 2. Have had better reception, less outagess and better equipment than with DISH. Dtv now has a bunch of HD channels coming off an mpeg4 stream. Not sure what DISH is doing. Never had a problem with customer service or hardware either.

YMMV though, i have friends who rave about DISH.

I too am becoming fed up with cable. I have thought about dish but haven't really checked into it. I always wondered if one could still get online with a dish ala a 360 or PS3.

I have DirecTV and love it. I have never used Dish nor do I know anyone that uses Dish so I can't comment on them.

Re: Dish Network or DirecTv ??

My hangups with DTV have been that as a Phillies and Flyers fan, I wasn't/haven't been able to see games even if I would have bought MLB-TV and Center Ice because of the blackout rules. Apparently ComCast Philly and DTV do not like each other. So if local sports is your concern, check that DTV carries your team's station before you sign on the virtual dotted line.

Speaking of which, problem #2 with DTV is make sure you read EVERY agreement. I didn't know getting a digital video recorder (DTV's TIVO) locked me in for 2 years vs. 1. The only upside was that I was able to (electronically over the telephone) suspend my service for 6 months w/o paying for those six months, coinciding with baseball season. So that worked out.....luckily.

I have DISH and I'm a very satisfied customer. I think DTV took the lead on the HD channels, but that will always be a battle where one system is in the lead for 6 months to a year and then it switches to the other and vice versa.

Frankly, both are better than cable and that's the bottom line!

                    Good post.

Same here. I've had both so I've seen both sides.

Right now just recently Directv added more HD channels so they both have some of the same channels, and the other doesn't have. With Dish, i'm not sure how much you'd be interested in the Voom HD channles. Some people personally like having a Monsters HD channels. I enjoy cartoons so their Animania channel shows some classics like Pink Panther, Felix the Cat, and some other cartoons in HD and the family channel which shows things like Flipper, The Thunderbirds, and some other things in HD. I mostly watch those but that all depends on the person.

Equipment - Dish has their own which I have no problem with at all. I have a dual tuner HD DVR (connects to 2 tv's) and on HD box and i have no problems wiht outages.

Price- may be a few dollars less in their prices compared to Directv but again, its up to you.

Directv has top quality equipment as well. Tivo DVR's and so on. BTW, you're going to have to pay for these boxes ($300 or so)

I never had outage problems with them either (cable lies so much about this), and their HD channels will satisfy you just the same.

Bottom line, ditch cable forever like the rest of us did, you'll pay less and have better quality.

Oh and if you didn't know, all of them are raising prices. (Direct and Dish on hte HD packages) and Cable just like they always do.

I'm a former 5 year Direct Network customer and now 1 year DirectTV customer... DirectTV all the way. Better programing, better service.

I have Dish Network HD and I am pleased. Never had any issues with it. Very rarely does the picture go out since they installed my HD Dish. Prior to installing the HD dish it used to go out quite a bit when it rained. The tech who came out and hooked up my HD dish and receiver ended up rewiring the whole system. He told me the guy who was their previous did a lousy job. Ever since he rewired it very very rarely have I lost picture. The service has been very good.

As for the poster who said their customer service is good, I would have to disagree.

I had a problem when I order Center Ice last year. I was supposed to be billed over 3 months and to a credit card I provided them instead of to the bill. Instead they billed the whole thing to the credit card. When I called to complain they took the 2 extra payments off. The next month when it was time to bill the card again they put the next payment on the bill and charged it twice and then did the same thing the following month.

Only once when I called customer service did I speak to someone who was not Indian. At least when I spoke to the manager (who was American) after trying to explain to many times the screw up to the simple minded reps she was able to see what I was talking about and fixed it in 2 minutes.
