ABBA were at best, a 'guilty pleasure' back in the day...

But if you can get past the 'English as a second language' vibe, you'll find that the songs are very musically sophsicticated...

"Dancing Queen" for instance, fuses George McCree's "Rock the Boat", Miami Beah inspired disco drum pattern with piano chording straight out of the light classical Rachmaninoff songbook...

Add the Barry White style string arrangement and you've got something that, like a Volvo, might not be the most exciting thing out there, but it sure is quality craftmanship that stands the tests of both time and broad base appeal...

Don't let the clothes, the unison harmonies and the stilted, soulless delivery fool ya...

Sometimes good cheese is simply good cheese...

I can vividly remember being six years old in '77 and the Bee Gees being my favorite group.

No doubt. Anyone under 30 will not understand how cool it was growing up then.

How can anyone not sing along in their head when they think of "Dancing Queen"? It's bubblegum pop, but ABBA was just catchy. Sure, not pushing the boundaries of the industry, but sometimes you just want fun music.

It's catchy, for sure, but when you spend 4 days at Mandelay Bay in Vegas where Mamma Mia! is performed, you grow tired of it very quickly, haha.

That was Frankie Valli, not the Bee Gees, if you're referring to "Oh, what a niiiiiiight, late September back in '63, what a very special time for me. What a lady, what a night."

EDIT: Looking it up I can't find a reference to it... but I distinctly remember watching them cover it on TV with my father as a kid.

I see some people defending ABBA by saying it was the era of disco. That's true but ABBA's brand of disco never did it for me. I LOVE disco music. Sometimes I wish I was alive during that time just to hear those sounds emanating from the beatboxes etc etc.

Hell disco was so cool that punk and rock bands did their own disco tunes!

There was disco Bee Gees and there was pre-disco Bee Gees.

The pre-disco Bee Gees were unique and innovative. The disco Bee Gees should be shot.
