Re: New Master P song actually has a message!! Wake up Hip Hop!!
How much money do he think he's going to make off of this? Not much in my book. If he wanted to make money he would have just stuck with his old formula because nowadays positive hip hop doesn't make money in the industry.Yes but thats not the case here. In 2006, he came out with a gangsta rap album that sold nothing. He was off the radar and nobody cared about him. In 2007, he decided to speak out in support of not using the n word and got press for it. So he decided to run with it. This is a money grab nothing else.
The guy is 40 yrs old. Does it really take you 20 yrs to realize that rapping about drug dealing and violence is wrong? Is it just a coincedence that his change to positive rap happened at the same time his sales were in the toilet?
I know hip hop artist make adjustments to the times but this would fall out of the norm if this was just a money grab. Positive hip hop hasn't made money since Public Enemy in the early 90's.I have more respect for a man who let's me know where he stands, even if he's wrong. Than the one who comes up like an angel and is nothing but a devil. - Malcolm XComment

Like I said, he wasnt making money off of gangsta rap anymore. His last 6 albums have been flops so sticking to the old formula wasnt working. He's a hustler and he was looking for a new angle and this is it. Also, I consider guys like Talib Kweli and Mos Def positive and conscious rappers and they can still sell records. How much money do he think he's going to make off of this? Not much in my book. Yeah, Kweli and Def can sell a little but are they on the same level as 50 Cent? Or Jay-Z? Or even Kayne West? Those two guys are not even on the same level of sales as the previous artist that I mentioned. Not too sure about Kweli last couple of albums but I know Mos Def's last one didn't even make gold. With hip hop being in mainstream music, going gold is nothing. Yeah, Kweli and Def has had albums that went gold but 50, Jay-Z and even Kanye's albums go gold in the first week. Now that's selling records!Like I said, he wasnt making money off of gangsta rap anymore. His last 6 albums have been flops so sticking to the old formula wasnt working. It's a sad state that talented artist like these two have little selling power in the industry because of what they rap about. And that's why I question if Master P is doing this to sell records because top notch MC's like Kweli and Def can barely get their albums to gold status.I have more respect for a man who let's me know where he stands, even if he's wrong. Who said anything about selling 50 Cent or Jay-Z numbers? P's last six albums havent even sold over 200,000. P would be happy if his album went gold. P isnt on a major label anymore so he gets more points per album than an average rapper. If he sells 100 or 200k he will probably make just more than alot of gold and platinum artists make off their major label albums.Yeah, Kweli and Def can sell a little but are they on the same level as 50 Cent? My point is he realized he couldnt even sell a 100k doing gangsta rap anymore and no one cared about him anymore. He was receieving no press until he came out against gangsta rap last summer. Once the press started paying attention, he ran with it and now is coming out as a positive rapper. Look, I always thought he was a no talent rapper but a savvy businessman and this continues to prove my point. If he could sell more records as a gangsta rapper, he would still be rapping about hustlin, rims and girls just like he was a little over a year ago. But he realized he cant and he flipped it. He's hoping this media attention will help him sell a few records.
I'm not knocking his hustle...just dont try to sell this like he had a legitimate awakening or life changing moment. The guy is just trying to sell records.
P.S. Mos Def's last album didnt go gold because he refused to promote it and the label released it without his consent.Comment

I hear that but I still wouldn't call him "gangsta" but maybe that's just me. I look at it more like that's the route he took b/c he thought it would sell rather than that's who he was. Semantics I suppose... but when I think of him the person I never considered him "living the life".
Not a fair comparison. Those guys aren't out to sell. Of course they want to make money but they care more about the music than the numbers. 50, Jay, Kanye... they care about the numbers. Not really fair to compare the two angles.Yeah, Kweli and Def can sell a little but are they on the same level as 50 Cent? Or Jay-Z? Or even Kayne West?
