    Journey

So yesterday my girlfriend tells me one of her friends broke up with his girlfriend and wanted to give us his two tickets to see Journey who was performing at Planet Hollywood that night. I had no idea they even still toured, but figured free + Journey can't be bad.

So we show up a little early and the crowd is almost 50% Asian. A little strange I think. My best friend is Filipino so I don't care but it just doesn't seem like a "Journey" crowd. Little do I realize. The seats are really close and I'm just relaxing.

Lights dim, show starts, and the new lead singer (who is Filipino) runs out on stage...Arnel Pineda! All I can say is that I was blown away. This guy is pure electricity and absolutely rocked. I find out later this is the first US show with Arnel as the new lead singer. Another bit of funny trivia is that the guys in Journey were surfing You Tube and found his old band (The Zoo) where he did a lot of Journey songs, and really liked him. They made contact and the rest is history.

Here is Arnel singing in his old band. You can skip to about the 40 second mark. His voice is absolutely phenomenal. I would pay money to see them again if they come back to Vegas.

    Re: Journey

I don't know if there is anyone that has followed this story as much as me. Before Journey even hired this guy I was posting on Journey's myspace, posting on arnel's video page telling this guy to GET INTO JOURNEY. I was THRILLED to see that Neil caught wind of the videos and ended up giving the job to Arnel.

Here's a funny story: Like I said about a month or so before the Arnel to Journey rumors came out I had posted on one of the Youtube pages that contain the above video, he had the most videos of Arnel so I figured he was in close courters with him. I posted how Arnel needs to come to ada and what not. Well about 3 weeks ago I got a few messages from a few people. Here are what they said:

" I would like to think that you were instrumental to his joining journey by posting to thier site. Good Work Man!"

and then this one made me laugh out loud:

"Hi, I saw you comment on Arnel Pineda's Journey cover video inviting him sing in Journey, so I suppose you ARE Neil, but im not sure, try to answer me PLEASE! iM FROM CHILE AND i JUST SAW jOURNEY IN TV, BYE"

Now I don't think I had any part in him coming to Journey but I am REALLY glad that they picked this guy. But it was neat that I was pushing for this guy on various sites before he got the gig and sure enough he did.

Best guy for Journey since Perry! He'll bring new life into Journey for sure!

If you want to see Arnel singing with Journey click on the link, its of their Chile performances, Arnel's first ever concert with them and does a phenomenal job!

    JOURNEY ON!

Wow. That was impressive. I've just recently started to like this band, probably cause of Rockband and Guitar Hero.

Just to get an idea, do they just tour now with different members or something?
I don't like the Yankees, I like the Red Sox, I don't like the Lakers, I like the Celtics, I hate the Canadiens and I love the Bruins. Soccer is the best sport on Earth, but most Americans are too ignorant to realize it. I am American.

Looks like the pianist/keyboardist( Johnathan Cain), bass player(Ross Valory), and of course Schon are the original members still playing. The drummer looked to young, and I think the one they had from their late 70's/early 80's heyday was let go long ago.

Big Journey fan here.. I did read on their site of this guy - gotta say I am impressed.. Of course, Perry is still "the one", but the new guy didn't sound too bad..

I saw them at Jones Beach about 2 years ago ("A night with Journey" - it was billed.. they gave away their latest CD for free at the show). Course it was "the other" Steve on vocals... What was neat about the show was that each band member got to showcase their vocals on songs. Jonathan Cain also stuck it out - having to go right to the hospital after the show to have his appendix removed..

Count me in as one also. Bought guitar hero 3 for "Anyway You Want It" last weekend. Anyways Back in the summer of 1994 I got to meet Steve Perry and he was the most gracious, down to earth person I ever met.Been a fan of Journey since I got the greatest hits cd back in 1989. Even though I mainly listen to country music now I still listen to some of the classic rock greats like Journey.I can't wait for June 3rd to pick this new cd up. Arnel has that Perry type timbre in his voice but no one will ever top Steve!

by the way, what is with Journey and their lead singers leaving for medical reasons? I just read on the site that the "new Steve" left the bad for that reason, much like Perry did earlier...

Perry had a bad hip, Steve Augeri had a bad throat.

Didn't Perry also have a problem with his vocals as well? I saw something like that mentioned on their "Behind the Music" episode...

No, the speculation came when he was taking his mother to different cancer treatment specialists. People would see him there and think he was under going treatment for his voice. After his mom passed in late 1985 he did one more album and tour with Schon and Cain in 1986 called Raised On Radio. That was the one Randy Jackson from american idol was on. After that he had enough of the BIZ and went away for a couple years. The only thing different with his vocals is natural aging. Male cords thicken with age. Personally I like his tonal quality now more then when he was hittin those high notes on pre Escape era. Nonthing wrong with him at all, he's just retired.
