Re: Third Graders Accused of Plotting to Hurt Their Teacher
Never.
My parents didn't believe in grounding me, didn't believe in taking my toys away, didn't believe in hitting me, etc. etc.
They knew that if I was acting up and they did something like that, it wouldn't stop me, and it would probably just make me worse, which it would have. Take something away from me and I'm going to want it more, hit me because of something and I'm not only still going to do it, but I'm going to learn to do it better so they don't catch me, or bigger to give them a reason to hit.
However, since they never did, I never acted up.Comment

Ah, the dreaded BELT!! As a twin I'd say 90% of my whippings were shared by my brother. Don't know how much good it did. My younger brother (now 43) never got a "spanking".Comment

I could say that it's been getting worse ever since they put "Under God" into the pledge that the students say everyday, but that would be just as asinine.
It just comes down to parenting. That's really the bottom line.Comment

I wouldnt say that this stuff has never been happening in our school systems even when there was prayer, but it has gotten rapidly worse ever since its been taken out. So I dont know, I'll co-sign with you.Comment

Re: Third Graders Accused of Plotting to Hurt Their Teacher
There isn't one single answer to parenting, what works for one child might not work for another, there is no one universal discipline practice that works on all kids. I see that many parents seem to have kids and want someone else to raise them, they like the idea of having a child but don't want to put in the work it takes to raise them aside from providing the necessities.I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

Yes, he's obviously the exception. Being relatively disciplined without child abuse is far more rare than children plotting to kill a teacher.
All of this "back in the day" nonsense is utter crap. Prior to the internet, who's to say this didn't go on all the time? How many of you guys were in tune to what was happening in Waycross, GA? Maybe this is an annual Waycross tradition.
Obviously that's not true, but these sensationalist reactions are ridiculous.
Maybe my generation is a bunch of undisciplined punks with our gangster rap and Nintendos.
But then again, my generation has yet to commit multiple counts of genocide, participate in a war that killed tens of millions, keep people out of schools, jobs, and bathrooms for the color of their skin, have communist uprisings, or outlaw porn.Comment

You are badly mistaken if you think a butt spanking is child abuse, there is a big difference.Comment

These "young punks" havent grown up yet. Give it some time and will see how things go way down the road when they're in charge of everything.Last edited by bsb13; 04-02-2008, 09:33 PM.Comment

What about the hippie generation? I'm way too young to know what the older generation was saying about them but I bet it was basically the same thing you said right there. Things seem to have turned out all right for them.Comment

Re: Third Graders Accused of Plotting to Hurt Their Teacher
Your statement is right, but its not just that, its that society moved away from God as a whole and statistics show that since that point, everything that was prayed for in that school prayer has gone downhill. Before that, most problems in schools wouldn't even be looked at as problems today. There are plenty of studies out there to prove this, but that probably borders against the rules here.Comment
