For sure, you can't be mad and angry all the time. As a teenager it was nothing but rap and metal, I still listen to underground hiphop that tends to have more meaning, and I'll dip in to classic rock every now and then.

      Change is a good thing.

Re: Is anyone else finding their musical tastes "mellowing" as they get older?

Until I was 22-23 I listened to nothing but hardcore/underground hip-hop, whatever you want to call it.

Since I got out of college I haven't bought a single rap album (not even Nas') and listen to rap maybe once a month. And even then it's mostly pre '97 stuff.

Now I listen to much more mellow, chill stuff. Van Morrison, Don McLean, Jack Johnson, etc.

Yeah, my listening habits changed quite a bit. Used to be anything and EVERYTHING except COUNTRY music. Now all I listen to for the most part is 80's, 90's, sports talk and COUNTRY, wtf.

Re: Is anyone else finding their musical tastes "mellowing" as they get older?

Maybe "mellower" isn't the term, but I think change is definitely inevitable regarding music tastes, especially if you're overplaying a certain genre. I think the more different styles you listen to, the longer life that music will have. At least thats the case with me. I listened to RATM and Soundgarden all through high-school. I don't listen to either of them as much, but I still enjoy some hard-rock through Eagles of Death Metal, Queens of the Stone Age, Sabbath, etc. So, if anything, RATM and Soundgarden helped push my boat off into directions of other hard-rock bands and this has happened with other genres as well. Actually, as I have gotten older, I've discovered more styles of music than I would have even considered when I was younger. A Danish rockabilly band probably wouldn't have crossed my mind 5 years ago.

So, I still love my hard-rock and will so for the foreseeable future, but I think the key to keeping that around longer is to have variation with what you listen to because while I love to go balls out sometimes, I also love listening to Marvin Gaye, Neko Case, Hank Williams, Robert Johnson, MF DOOM, etc.

From middle school down thru high school(97-04)I was STRICTLY rap. All that R&B stuff I would've NEVER gave it a chance then lol.

Nowadays(now 21),when I listen to rap, there's only a select group of Artists I will listen to,all that other crap that keeps coming out now,I wouldn't give that mess a chance. I've also given R&B a chance actually as well(I try to get at least 1-2 R&B cds per week in the rotation)But when I'm not listening to Cd, Only thing I listen to on the radio is Sports Talk radio.

Yeah, once you get older you do realize that there is so much music out there that it peaks your interest to try something new. Growing up, I mostly just listened to Rap but since the mid-90's I switched to various other genres of music.

I've always listened to a range of music (mostly rock) and still do. But I do switch on the older stuff a bit more than the latest metal album out. It depends on my mood but it seems every year the first break of warm weather in the spring I end up putting in some acoustic Alice in Chains which progresses to Zeppelin/Floyd and so on..

I would say I definitely listen to less hard rock than I used to. I'm listening to groups like Guster, Death Cab for Cutie, and Bears thanks to my wife and our friends, who have different taste in music than my friends from high school and college.

Yup, I know what you mean. Granted, I am only 20, but in high school is was ALL hard rock with some crappy radio friendly music thrown in.

I've noticed that now I still listen to some hard rock, no rap, and a lot of easy going stuff. Heck, i've had Bob Marley's "Legend" in my truck's CD player for about a month now.

I've always listened to mellow music, so nothing has changed for me. Never liked metal or rap. I've always been a fan of older music. Must have come from my mom owning a record store in the 80s. That's what she would play all the time.

I've always been a fan of 80's and other older stuff...I will say that at 27 almost 28 I'm listening way less to the "popular" new radio stations. I'm a lot more out of the loop as to what's "cool"...I think it's just a penalty of getting older, plus I don't go clubbin' or to parties that blast music like this that often nowadays. I'm more likely to just chill with friends or go to the chill bars vs loud and crazy clubs or house parties.

If you ever have the chance to take classical music class in college do so. It's good stuff. Possibly because my teacher was awesome but he told some crazy stories about the composers. Half them were on opium and hallucinogens..
