    2008 Smack Off!

Alright Clones, let's get your picks as to whose gonna win this years Jim Rome Smack Off!

I like..Joe in the OC, Vic in NoCal, Terrance in Sierra Madre, and...the SlamMan Jay Mohr! A dark horse is Rachel in Houston. I really think Jim won't let Terrance win...a couple years he had very, very good calls and one year he should have won, his call was so much better than anyone elses. It sounds stupid, but I think Jim likes calling him..."the best caller to never win a SmackOff every time he calls." Finally, Oren in Denver his either real good...or real bad, and he always talks for way to long and Rome has to cut him off...so I don't think he'll get it.

I was listening to Rome the other day and he said J.T. the Brick was a former Smack Off Winner? Wow! Talk about getting a big break! It's kind of discouraging to us hard working young guys in the business who put in their time in small little AM stations with 1000 people listening.

Good for him though. Personally, I've never been a fan of Rome's show. I just don't get his style, I guess. It sounds so contrived.

I agree, but i think the majority of big show hosts (TV and radio) just have their gig bc they talk really loud and disagree 90% of the time just so they can disagree and get their face on TV more.

You too can be a 5* recruit at FSU.......

I can't wait to hear Vic in NoCal flame out. Also excited to hear Jay Mohr. My pick to win is Oran in Denver.

I read somewhere that J.T. and Rome actually have a little beef going; supposedly with J.T. thinking that he's larger than Rome, and not giving him credit for his success.

Rome's show, however, I listen on occasion, when he's conducting an interview. And sometimes his monologues are entertaining. I remember him one time going on about (former MLBer) Otis Nixon and how he had a bodyguard... "You're Otis freaking Nixon.... Nobody knows who you are; what do you need a bodyguard for?!?!?" That was funny... The whole clones thing, I could do without.

Yes, J.T. won the very first Smack Off, many years ago, he was a regular caller at that time, and he straight killed it. I think he got his break a few months after that.

I've listened to Rome for over 17 years, when he was a guy putting in his time on small time AM station with 1000 people listening. He's been the same way, all these years, and has actually mellowed over the years, since he became a family man.

His style isn't for everyone, but I like it because I have that same sort of relentlessly sarcastic/iconoclastic persona. The people he mocks are always, IMO, deserving of the ridicule he heaps on them.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

              Vic in NoCal was garbage.

Vic got a beatdown by both Mohr and Doc. Personally, I like Jay Mohr, then Doc Mike.

I've always enjoyed his rants on the rat and the dook program... Classic.

I like his interviews, he just relates and talks to the athletes well.

I hate the rest of the show. It's just so dumb with him saying "Rack it" all the time, or going "Durrrrr" and sounding like an idiot. I love listening to the interviews, it shows Rome is a smart and pretty cool guy. I hate that the rest of the show makes him seem as contrived as Stephen A Smith. For that reason I can never listen to more than 5 minutes of non interviews...After I've heard the 10th "Rack it" or him just saying "Clones" all the time it gets old.

I guess it doesn't help that I'm not into the Smack Offs at all. I don't give a crap about Terrence, Rachel, etc. You're calling into sports radio to make fun of other guys on sports radio, how lame is that? It seems like the people who call in are all the ones we'd make fun of in college for being dumb.

Anyways, enjoy it. I see the appeal, just for whatever reason he drives me nuts and I can't stand his shtick for long. It's crazy, because when he drops the act and interviews he's great...

His interviews are actually the least favorite part of his show to me. Nothing against Rome, but IMO 95% of sports interviews are recycled garbage. "Kevin (Garnett) did you sign because you want a ring, or was it for the money?" Duh. Wonder which one he's gonna say. I listen to Rome for his opinions, his humor, and yes..the callers that smack on one another, it's funny.
