Re: Ok im late I know The Wire
Best show ever, and I say that with 100% confidence. An absolute masterpiece. I've seen the entire series through 3 times and am in the process of watching Season 3 with commentary right now (my friend has the DVDs). I'll buy them as a set when they come out with Season 5, I'm sure... as a sign of respect/love if nothing else.
Can't wait for Simon's next project. I also need to go back and watch Homicide: Life on the Streets, because I missed that show when it was on. If you haven't checked it out, watch The Corner, which was Simon and Burns' mini-series on HBO following the lives of a family in Baltimore -- one of the most heart-wrenching things I've ever watched.
Here's my desktop background:
Yeah, I'm kind of obsessed with Baltimore and boarded-up rowhouses now. I plan to go visit B-More to check it out because The Wire made me feel some serious connection to the place.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

Re: Ok im late I know The Wire
I've never been to the East Coast, so it would be a combination trip with DC and some other spots I'm sure. Haha, but yeah, I'm sure not everyone shares my obsession with this show... I'd just go check out Marlo's Spot near Gay St., sit on the McNulty/Bodie bench, go to the Greek's restaurant out by the ports... that kind of stuff.
The architecture and starkness of the rowhouses really appeals to me. I dunno what it is. The pictures that I've seen of the ones painted bright colors or with messages on them are really amazing... I dunno, it's so uncommon to see large swaths of empty city... if you see it all the time, it's probably not a big deal.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

Re: Ok im late I know The Wire
I was telling my fiance the other day I wanted to sit down and every weekend rent a season and watch it. I have heard nothing but great things about the series.
I need to watch Entrouage too (I have yet to see a episode of The Wire or Entourage)
I also need to catch up on some Soprano's I didn't even see the series finale.Comment

Re: Ok im late I know The Wire
Haha, well thanks for the advice. I will go to NYC as a trip of it's own, but I have family in Virginia near DC, so I'd at least go check out B-More. I gotta go to Marlo's spot and the American Brewery Building area...
Dookie, I'm in the process of watching The Sopranos from the beginning and I'm really enjoying it. Not on the level of The Wire so far, but enjoyable for sure, and Tony is a fabulous character. I've never had HBO, so I missed out on all of these shows pretty much until I started getting everything from the net. Never watched Entourage or Deadwood, both of which I heard were good also. HBO owns TV basically...
And yeah, definitely get Season 1 on DVD and watch at least the first 3 episodes in a row to situate yourself with the show. The first episode is more confusing than anything just because you don't know who anyone is -- the show works best when you watch it in large chunks anyway, but it's really disorienting at first because they don't do much introductory stuff...Last edited by Stumbleweed; 05-14-2008, 03:50 PM.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

In all seriousness, there are a lot of great things about Baltimore but I would agree that a cross country trip just for Bmore would be, well, a waste of money. If you're in the area (northern VA/DC) and have time, drive on up. Hit me up if you want some suggestions.
As for the row houses, those areas are really better seen from a far... or on tv. The Wire is very accurate in a lot of ways. It really is a sight to see though, and pretty sad. I pretty much grew up not too far from where the Corner was filmed. The pockets like that are defining Baltimore b/c that's what's being put out there. It's good to bring light to it but bad that it's the rap the city overall is getting. Honestly, looking for the "bad" areas, you can hit up DC, Philly, etc. and the dynamic is a little different but it's pretty much the same scene.Comment

I tend to agree with you about the city, but I still like to go to Canton, Federal Hill every once and a while and on a rare occassion Fells Point. But yeah Baltimore is crap.Moderator

Re: Ok im late I know The Wire
Yeah I feel sorta dirty going to check out a place that's so poor and looking at houses that used to have people in them as some kind of tourist activity due to a TV show. I dunno, in Denver there's not really much of an actual urban residential area -- it's either downtown (rich, full of businesses), suburbs, or little city neighborhoods. The whole area is something utterly foreign to me because of the surroundings in which I grew up -- and I'm interested to see it in-person after being so captivated by it via The Wire.
It's the same reason I love Amsterdam so much -- the design of the city is just so different than I'm used to (they even have rowhouses too, though they're canalhouses out there.. heh)...
It's just hard not to feel attached to the place when it really functioned as the main character in The Wire, which I absolutely adore. I read the god damned Baltimore Sun online every now and then just to see what's up in the city.. haha, pretty sad really.
I gotta ask -- is this actually still on North Ave?

Baltimore has its place, but if you've never been East, its place is not at the front.Comment
