Re: Five Albums That Best Sum Up Your Taste In Music

Can this include compilations or only albums?

    Anywho

Frank Sinatra: The Capitol Years - A great 3 CD box set that goes through Sinatra's years with Capitol Records. You've got bouncy swing numbers and sad slow songs.

Bob Marley Legend - A great overview of Marley's work with the Wailers and while I easily get burned out listening to the CD I still come back to it from time to time. Bob was DA MAN!

MC hammer: Inside Out - This is a little known MC Hammer album as it was released well after he lost his "cool". Still for my money it was one of the more heartfelt albums i've heard from a modern day artist. The CD is worth is alone just for the song "I hope things change" which had a great mix of gospel flavour and emotion that made the song powerful to me.

Marvin Gaye: What's Going On - I've said so much about this album that there doesn't need to be anything said except i'll quote Marvin talking to Smokey Robinson about it "Smoke, This album wasn't done by me, it was done by God"

Marvin Gaye: Hear My Dear - One of the most depressing albums i've ever listened to. It's the vocal equivalent to his Trouble Man album. Even though this album is depressing as all hell it's still very beautiful and heartfelt. The song "Anger" has a sound that harkens back to his WGO days but the true masterpiece of the album IMO is "Sparrow" it's such a beautiful and loving song of internal peace for Marvin that's put smackdab into an album with so much bitterness and depressing statements about a marriage gone horribly wrong.

1.) Lupe Fiasco's Food and Liquor - Lupe Fiasco

        2.) What's Goin' On - Marvin Gaye

3.) Hybrid Theory - Linkin Park

        4.) In Search Of.... - N.E.R.D.

        5.) Brown Sugar - D'Angelo

Honorable Mention: 2pac "Me Against The World", My Chemical Romance "Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge", Lil' Wayne "Tha Carter II", Outkast (Any of their albums....I'm a big Outkast fan), Michael Jackson "Thriller"

Even though it was tough to leave the H.M.'s off the list, that pretty much sums up my interest in music. There's just times when I'm in deep contemplative mode I'll listen to some thought-provoking hip-hop (Lupe), then there's times I wanna let my windows down and listen to some rock (LP and N.E.R.D.), then there's times when I wanna cool out and listen to some smooth R&B (Marvin and D'Angelo)

Re: Five Albums That Best Sum Up Your Taste In Music

                      ok, let me try:

Japan- Tin Drum. A perfect mix of Western art-rock and Asian folk music. This album was way ahead of it's time when released in 1981.

Gang Starr-Step in the Arena. A perfect combination of Rap and Jazz. Guru's great lyrics and DJ Premier's digging deep into his record collection may never have been equaled in the hip-hop game.

Pink Floyd-Wish you were here. Amazingly spacey, futuristic, with slight Jazz textures makes this a great Space/progressive album that nobody else seems to even try(except maybe Gong).

The Cure-Faith. This album may be the perfect one for a grey cloudy day. So moody and jagged that you get sucked in until the end. the last song, Faith, almost sounds like a suicide letter put to music.

Galaxie 500-on fire. There were many indie bands in the U.S. in the 80's but these guys stood out. With a spacey guitar, narcotic bass, and jazzy drumming they had a sound that nobody else at the time was doing. A shame they broke up a few months before Nirvana and Pearl Jam got big because they would have been big time in the Alternative explosion of the early 90's.

The albums/CDs that define "my musical taste" (in order)

                        1. "Neverland" - Night Ranger (A collection of great musicians who can ALL write and play with the best of them. "Forever All Over Again" is perhaps my favorite song of all time.)

                        2. "Vital Signs" - Survivor (IMO and many critics as well, Jimi Jamison has THE best voice in pop/rock history. "I Can't Hold Back" and "High On You" arfe timeless 80's pop/rock classics.)

                        3. "IV" - Toto (A collection of studio musicians who could just "tear it up" whether it be in a studio or on stage. Bobby Kimball is another great voice in R&R. Steve Lukather is just simply a bad@ss. The musicians who played on this LP have over two dozen Grammy's between them for various other projects that they have worked on in their careers including the Grammy's this LP won.)

                        4. "Raised On Radio" - Journey (A very under-rated Journey LP IMO. Steve Perry was still in his prime free of throat ailments, Neil Schon was, well.... Neil Schon, Jonathan Cain did his best writing on this LP and ya gotta love the bass of AI's Randy Jackson...what up, dog?)

(tie) 5. "Rock And Roll Over" - KISS (Definitely not every KISS fan's favorite KISS LP, but to me, it defines the sound that the band wnated to achieve during their rise to supremacy in the mid to late 70's. "Mr. Speed" is amazing everytime I hear it.)

"Don't Look Back" - Boston (Who knew a geek from M.I.T. with a couple thousand dollars, only three years of guitar playing under his belt, and a patch-work recording studio in his basement could create such magic?)

I know....what a cop-out by throwing the tie in just to get a 6th album. But these are what sum up my interests in both what I like to listen to and what I like to play.

My musical tastes have changed a few times as I've gotten older, so that's why some of the stuff is newer and not as "classic"

Jack Johnson - In Between Dreams
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Chronicle: 20 Greatest Hits
Dropkick Murphys - Do Or Die
Evans Blue - The Melody And Energetic Nature Of Volume
Four Tops - The Ultimate Collection

Man, tough to keep it at just 5, though 10 would be just as hard.

                                1) Weezer - Blue (Pinkerton would/should also be on my top 5, but I'll keep it at one Weezer album)

                                2) Foo Fighters - The Colour and The Shape

                                3) Led Zeppelin - IV

                                4) Incubus - Make Yourself

                                5) Bob Marley - Legend
                                -------------------------
The Beatles could fill out 4 or 5 spots on my top ten, but I couldn't decide on just one.
