I've had Vista since February and haven't had any issues at all. Not one lockup either.

Same here... Vista has been REALLY good at getting out of lockups on my two systems. If a program messes up, it'll prompt for the program to shutdown rather than the whole OS freezing up as it always did whenever I used XP Pro. Faster boot up times as well.

Also, Service Pack 1 came out pretty recently, so a lot of bugs were fixed and some tweaks were done to improve performance. Not bad so far.

Interesting. When it came out (and even now sometimes), all I would hear would be knocks on Vista, and since I'm very happy with XP, I figured I'd try to find one with XP next time around too.

I guess I just gotta get a lot of RAM.

2 gigs is enough for Vista. I wouldn't call that a "lot" myself..

Piggybacking a bit here, but how much higher would the prices soar if you wanted to play most of the graphical heavy games on the market via a laptop? Do I need an 8800 video card or would 8700 suffice?

XPS M1530, does it support 8800 vid cards? OR asking even more could someone put together a laptop on Dell that would run most of the games and post the specs here?

I honestly don't know too much about computers but my Inspiron is dying and so I need to get a new one relatively soon as well. I'm wanting to get back into PC-gaming as well (more things like Company of Heroes than FPS).

PS for some reason my extra HDD space keeps vanishing. I had 500 MB yesterday, and no I have like 8 MB, any idea where it could be going? I don't have any computer issues or anything, at least not according to RegCure, avast, etc.
I won't ask for Christmas or birthday gifts if you subscribe to the Operation Sports Newsletter (Not Just Another Roster Update). I write it, and it hits your inbox every Friday morning (for freeeeeee). We also have an official OS Discord you can now join.

Good question, I was asking myself this a lot too prior to ordering. An 8600 is actually good for most everything there is but the most graphically intense games from all of my research (games like Crysis but then that game needs more than an 8800 it seems LOL - at LEAST two anyways!). The XPS M1530 does have the 8800 as an option but I think it's like $300-400 more and honestly don't know if the extra cash is worth it. Your best bet might be to wait until a 9000 or whatever comes out and then the 8800 will drop like a rock...or simply go with an 8600.

I can tell you more if I get my laptop next week as I"ll be loading it up with some fairly recent games.

Yea please do. Is the 8700 crap or something, so it's better to stick with dual 8600's or something? I just want like medium settings or so.

Also if anyone could tell me where the fark my extra HDD space could be going that'd be greatttttt.

The one I had spec'd out ran about 1750 with the discount, which I'm perfectly fine paying. I'm just trying to keep it under 2,000.

Is there even an 8700? I don't think there is but maybe it's just rare or something? Everything I've ever seen has skipped from 8600 to 8800. I'll let you know.

Maybe you're right, I thought I saw an 8700 of some sort though.

Lol... anyway, I think Vista has some issue where it doesn't recognize anything above 4 GB of RAM... unless if you get the 64 bit version of Windows. Weird.

Also, you can get extra "RAM" if you have a USB thumb drive... just plug it in and Vista can make it act like extra RAM.. kinda like virtual memory.

Not that anyone really cares but I figured out where it went finally. Everytime I DLed something in iTunes that file went into My Music folder as well. So when I would delete the file from iTunes it still would be in My Music, even though I didn't realize that.

                              Just cleared 50 GB, ha.

Either way I need a new computer, but at least that problem is fixed.

For you guys having trouble viewing text and such on high resolution monitors, you can increase the DPI setting in Windows and it will make the text bigger and much easier to read.
