AVG has screwed the pooch with 8.0

Wow....what a classic example of fixing something that ain't broke. This thing has multiple issues from what I've read and also what I've experienced some. Apparently, if you really want to stick with AVG, you'll want to DL it from their mainsite vs. and DL host sites. Also, don't install the SafeSearch if you can avoid it. Some users are reporting browser slow down. Plus, this thing is a mem usage whore. (Check screen shot below). The big drawback for me was losing the flexibility of it in the systray. When it's gone from there it's gone. So when the only way to truly shut it down is from the Task Manager (and it doesn't show up under the Applications tab) in that same list.....there's no way to reactivate if I want to, even from the AVG control panel. It shows it's off, Windows XP shows no anti-virus is active, but there's no simple "ON" button for it.

Pretty poor AVG.... like I said if it ain't broke...don't fix it.

Anyone have any new AV programs (besides Avast) they want to mention that they've had good experiences with?

Same here, it asks me every single day to download 8.0. I'll wait til something better comes along.

Apparently updates for 7.5 will be gone as of this week.

My dad installed AVG 8 and he can't update it anymore. And it seems to make some troubles on his PC. It's clear that they want us to pay for the "fixed" version. I also hav ESET NOD32 and it's great. I have Windows Defender installed too. Now I need a good spyware program. I had Doctor Spyware or something but it got stuck so I uninstalled it.

I got rid of AVG (using Avast now) - AVG kept reporting "24,---" Warnings, many of which were needed

I have no problems with AVG 8.0 but I did notice the slowdown with the safesearch feature. Said feature isn't compatible with FF 3 so the slowdown issue is gone

Is Avast free? I'm just asking in case I run into any problems.

I installed AVG8 without safesearch (there's a command line switch you have to run when you install) and I'm happy with it.

                            NOD32 - is this a "free" program?

Hasn't missed a beat for me. It updates and scans on time like the previous version.
