After unsuccessfully trying to go back to 7.5 (minus a Windows dial back), since I wasn't allowed to update, I tried Avira and it appears that you can't get updates any longer. Going with AVAST.

Avira seems to take forever to download updates.. I put it back on my computer (briefly before Avast).. sat there for a long time before it downloaded..

however, supposedly it has the best detection rate out of the "Big Free" (Avast, AVG)

I couldn't get it to DL any update past 2006. What version of Avira do you have? I've installed AVAST and it's a bit of a mem hog too.

I actually bought my copy of AVG 8.0 and it works fine.My internet speed does seem slower, but that's no biggie to me.

I'm having no problems with AVG 8. I upgraded my 7.5 install on 2 XP and 1 Vista machine that I have at home. None of them are having any issues and none of them are sucking up extensive resources.

that's the one I used before Avast.. only thing it does not have is an e-mail scanner, which I really don't know if that is a big deal or not.

Quite honestly, I noticed a difference with AVG in terms of computer speed - it even slowed down my boot-up of OOTP 9, compared to avast..

I'm not liking the cons I'm reading re: AVIRA. The interruption of the scan cycle when a threat is detected and the ulta slow updating times isn't going to cut it. Nod32 will warrant a looking into.

I still wonder if it's free- checked the site, and it's only a 30-day trial..

Right now....going with A-Squared (A2) 3.5. Good reviews, but I'm still learning how to use it. AVAST was clearing interfering with my offline gaming.

I would recommend avoiding AVG, my last computer got infested with viruses running it. I use McAfee now.

a-squared is more of an anti-spyware program than a anti-virus..

That may be true.... I posted over at their forums to get a basic answer and got a canned response. They seem to have a good community there, but I don't want to jib jab with the a2 techies and geeks. I went to Kim Kommando's site and besides AVG, she recommends PC Tools AntiVirus. Gonna give it a whirl.

Addendum: Installed PC Tools and it is very much like AVG 7.5! I knew the Digital Goddess would come through! Still have to put it to the hard test of scanning, etc. But even so, PC and A2 running at the same time take up less mem than AVG 8.

Are you sure your AVG 8 wasn't having problems? I'm not seeing anywhere close to the level of memory utilization that you're seeing. If you don't mind the other features of it (safe search is terrible, but easy to disable), you might want to try a completely fresh install.
