Re: Mike & The Mad Dog could be finished

Francesa likes to think he's "connected", like some kind of sports "mafia wiseguy", throwing around how he's talked to people in the offices of different franchises, and he knows a lot of inside info, which usually ends up being wrong... The best was when his girlfriend Bill Parcells was rumored to be next for the Tampa Bay job after they got rid of Tony Dungy, and Mike said something like "I've asked Bill about it, and we had a conversation about it; but I can't say anything about it here", after which Russo jumped all over him... "Don't mention it, if you can't say anything about it! We all know that you're friends with Parcells; don't bring it up if you know you're not gonna say anything!!" That was my favorite Dog moment.

Dog solo would be painful for 5 hours, but he is better solo than Francesa. Francesa won't get guests on a regular basis, and he generally hates taking calls... Not a good mix for a sports TALK show...

I listened to them a little when I last drove in the NYC area. A little was all I could stand.

Re: Mike & The Mad Dog could be finished

I never listened to them regularly when I lived in NY. The most I would be in my car in the evenings was the 5-10 minute ride home from picking up my son at the babysitter's house. I would get tired of them shouting down callers, so I'd wind up listening to the other station, ESPN 1050, who had their own duo, Wally Matthews and Tom Keegan, two local sports columnists, and they were far more tolerable than Francesa and Russo. For some reason, I listen more now, especially during baseball season... I could never listen to Michael Kay and his daily Yankee suck-fest which now occupies Matthews and Keegan's spot on 1050.

I've been listening to these guys pretty much since they started. The show has gone downhill lately, so if the report is true, I won't be that upset. Check out this video of Mike talking about Brandon Inge:

I swear that some people call and if they see on TV that Mike isn't back from his Diet Coke/bathroom break they direct a question to him just to get Russo to say "Mike's not back yet" and make him look like an *** for not being there.

I also agree with catcatch22 that if I was ever on the show for an interview I'd have so much fun ripping on them. First I'd say "Mike I can hear you doodling while I talk, please stop" or wait for him to do his classic "preface my question with all this technical BS to show how superior my sports knowledge is" just so I could pull a Mike and go "This notion that (insert whatever Mike said) is totally ridiculous and the people who think that don't have ANY idea"

My friends and I used to actually "converse" in their language. I will never forget the time we were in a sport management class and my professor asked which sports league makes the most TV revenue. My friend raises his hand and with a dead straight face says: "The NFL, where they play...(dramatic pause)...for pay!!" just like Mike says it. I was almost crying trying not to laugh.
LMAO!! You should see Mike's face when he does it too, it's like he said something so brilliant.

I actually called up one time to mess with them but couldn't get through to debate them on a topic (yes they got me that upset, well Chris did anyway).

The topic was the NBA and today's player versus yesteryears. Chris was making Bob Cousy out as the second coming of Babe Ruth. Infact Chris was going out of his way to knock every talented black player comapred to every top white player. It was so obvious he was going in that direction it was just rediculous. At least Mike reigns him in with some sort of sanity.

I did not get through but it vexed me soo much I did extensive statistical research to back up my point and I called in on the weekend and got the lackey Mark Malouses (tries to be condenscending like the other 2). I explained that Cousy had a career shooting percentage under %40 and the way Chris made him out to be such a great shooter was hogwash! "These mythical legends" chris made them out to be was totally inaccurate when you look at all the rule changes and style of play that changed over the period of time.

Chris continues to say Stockton is better than Isiah even though Isiah in head to head matches statistically destroyed Stockton.

Listen to them when I'm living in NY. I like the humor involved, and though it can get annoying, you gotta love Mad Dog's over the edge rants!

I remember one time Mike got in trouble with Parcells when they parked their car in a handicapped zone at a restaurant somewhere.

Re: Mike & The Mad Dog could be finished

One of the main problems is Francessa's ego. he really does consider himself the "Sports doctor." He also has a bit of a problem...I don't know how to categorize it, but do you ever hear him repeat things constantly over and over? Like he'll say "I really like this player"...and then while talking with a caller or Russo, he'll repeat the same phrase sometimes 5-10 times. I don't know if it is a mini-Turrets thing or what, but it's like he has to repeat certain phrases when he is ad-libbing. Weird.

Russo is at least entertaining. He doesn't take himself as seriously as Mike does. Yeah, he pretends to know it all, but all these guys on the radio do...except maybe Somers. I actually ran into Russo about a week before Christmas last year at a camera store in Stamford. he came in and was on line behind me. I turned around and did a double take. He was very nice..we talked about cameras for a bit as he was there to get Mike a present. I didn't bother him with sports talk, but he is a nice guy and has his feet on the ground. Alot bigger than I'd thought he'd be too.

                      I love the show.

Either of them solo would suck though. It's good because they balance each other out. Mike alone would be boring, and Russo isn't a strong enough personality.

I hope they don't break up it's by far my favorite radio show.

I have heard from several people that Russo is actually a really nice guy in person... Francesa, on the other hand.... But it has been speculated that he was never really the same after his brother committed suicide. Probably he hasn't come to grips with it.

I think Russo is fine as well, he's suppose to be the wacky, off-the-wall part of a duo. It's Fatso that's the problem, get him out of there and get someone in there with more knowledge and less ego.

Yea one of my friends has met Russo a couple times, and says he's the exact same guy in real life as he is on the radio.

I still listen to them every so often, but the show has gotten worse in the past few years, so I wouldn't be too upset.

The only sports talk show I can listen to every day is Kellerman on 1050.
