Do not base any decison on burn in and gaming for your TV. Almost any channel that you watch has static images so you can't get away from it.

I have both and use my lcd for gaming because I heard plasma burns in easier and don't want that to happen.

I have a 42" Panny Plasma and absolutely love it. I went through 3 LCD's (including the 120 HZ ones) because I was scared of burn in. After each LCD gave me a headache from motion blur, I gave Plasma a shot and now, I will never go back to LCD. The Plasma handles motion a lot better than the LCD and the picture is second to none. I game on it about 50% of the time and watch movies/TV the other 50%. I have never had any problems with "burn in." If you go to an input setting (after you game) when the screen is black, you can sometimes see some slight image retention, but it goes away in 2 seconds after you watch TV.

Me too, with the same kind of tv (isn't the Panny a gem?) I would not worry about burn in, of course if you are careful.

I'll be buying another Samsung DLP in a month or so when I start my new job. This time i'm going with a 72" from Vanns. com for $2469. I can't wait, I know how much I've loved my 50" Samsung and this one will be 22" larger.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

haha, well i'd love to share the wealth with my OS'ers but i'm waiting until I win the lottery to do that. I always thought it'd be cool if I won the lottery to have an OS cookout and fly everyone in who wants to attend that has been a reg here for years and/or has a lot of posts.

72"? Are you compensating for something Dogg? That's a whole lot of tv to love, man.

It took 15 years of marriage to convince my wife that we needed the size of tv we have now.

My living room couldn't handle 72"...hell, 50" would be too big (it's longer and thin, and I end up sitting about 6-8 feet from the screen. I've got a 37 that seems just perfect for now. I'm not sure i could rationalize a 72" tv to myself, let alone a wife, and I just got an expensive new laptop lol

                          Re: Plasma vs LCD

Good advice here. I'll add my two cents:

I've had a Panasonic 42" plasma since September 2005, and I've never had a burn in issue. The only game I ever had an issue with was Madden -- the score bars were bright white and constantly on during the game. I got ghosting from them that would last for a couple hours. But they always went away and you didn't notice them unless you had no signal in the TV and were really looking for them.

I think plasmas have a slightly better picture than LCDs, but the gap has closed considerably in the last couple years. Like others said, as long as you set your TV up properly, you'll get a great picture. Look into getting a calibration DVD, it will really help you get the colors and white levels just right.

The only other advice I would give is to watch non-HD stuff on the TV before you buy it. HD stuff looks good even on below average HD sets. However, you're going to still be watching a lot of standard TV, and that is where you'll often see the difference between a good set and a bad one. If you do go toward LCD, also try to watch something fast moving like a sports broadcast -- most sets now handle the images properly, but you should look for any blurring.

Good luck. I know this seems very complicated but I had a lot of fun researching and shopping around. And remember that no matter what you choose, you're going to get a big upgrade over standard TV.

I don't know if this was already said but do I need to worry about whether a tv is 720p or 1080p?

                                Not really

IMO there's a little difference watching hi def movies and such but i think you should be good either way
