Actually, 1. the director/writer is very American, but he doesn't conform to entertaining grotesqueries like most Americans tend to (at least a fairly decent amount). 2. We marvel in the thought of someone slashing someone else's neck off. Why? I really have no idea... I think it's the guilty pleasure of being able to see something you lawfully wouldn't be able to do yourself (not that you may ever have any intentions of doing so anyway).

Let me put it this way, and it's important because there is a critical thirty seconds in this movie that is a turning point for everything this movie stands for...

If you read the Wikipedia plot, then you know that one of the villains turns back time so that his accomplice is not killed. That's right... he guides us through the movie several times (talks to the camera, infers to us what we want to happen in said alternate reality), and at one point, when we have an instant sense of satisfaction and katharsis, he grabs the remote control, rewinds, and changes the past. We're indulged by this; the fact that he has robbed us of any hope, the fact that the victims cannot win.

The director's image of this movie begs us to ask certain questions, like why things are happening the way they are, why somebody would enjoy something like this, and why we would ever watch anything like this, or better yet, continue watching it. He wanted people to do this, because normally people only see a movie for its content, but this one did so much more.

You're right, I thought he was American. Oops.

Either way, you can see an American doing the exact same thing, I don't think nationality has anything to do with it.

And you're right, I love it! I don't know why myself. I believe it is simply an unconscious provocative of ours that we must respect what we are unable to do for ourselves.

Just got it from Netflix.

What a terrible piece of ****. This is worse than torture porn, why the hell would anyone watch this, or want to watch this? No plot, no reason for the movie other than stupidity.

If I want disturbing images, I'll watch CNN or read my local paper.

TERRIBLE, 1 star only for the acting was great, just everything around it was awful.
