Valid point about lyricism and more notably a point I never even entertained so props to you for that. I can only speak for myself (I gave up championing for my era long ago) but while I've listened to hip hop pretty much since day one, lyrics are what really drew me deeper into the game. Once I started paying attetion to what was being said I was hooked for life. That's one thing I miss is the elevation lyrically. Most of the cats out here are talking about the same things.
And while early Hip Hop was about party ryhmes I wouldnt call what they were spittin jibberish. Cold Crush, Treacherous 3 & Furious 5 kicked decent stuff for those days. Especially Cold Crush with their routines...crazy.
Me being a former MC deosn't help matters much either as I'm extra hard on everybody and very critical. I have very high standands.
If I have any beef with the new generation, it's that most don't know (or don't care) about the history or the cats that came before them and that's so disrespectful to quote SAS. Forget the fact NY gets disrepected @ times (granted we as a city bring a lot of that on ourselves) and it just turns me off sometimes. That's the main reason I wanted to share the A$AP vids with y'all and anyone I can because it was really to cool to see him flip out (as he should've) from meeting the man he was named after. I can @ least respect him more b/c I know he has some sense of history.
I'm a firm believer in knowing your craft whatever it is. Whether you spit, hoop or you're an actor, you should be a student of the game.
