    Pioneer Develops 400-Gbyte Blu-ray Disc

Pioneer Develops 400-Gbyte Blu-ray Compatible Disc

    07.07.08

    by ExtremeTech Staff

Japan's Pioneer Corp.has developed an optical disc capable of holding 400 Gbytes, or about sixteen times the capacity of today's Blu-ray discs.

The technology is also backwards-compatible with the Blu-ray technology, Pioneer said, as the objective lens optical specifications are the same as used by the lenses in BD drives.
Each disc contains 16 layers of 25 Gbytes each, Pioneer said. For now, the disc is read-only. Pioneer solved these problems by, among other things, using a disc structure that can reduce crosstalk from adjacent layers, resulting in a 16-layer optical disc that can play back high-quality signals from every layer, the company said in a statement Monday. Pioneer will present the details of this research at the International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 2008 (ISOM/ODS2008) to be held in Hawaii from July 13, the company said.

Hopefully games will be able to take advantage of this when it gets done.

This has all kinds of possibilities, but im sure its like Blu-Ray and HDVD, announced and takes years to refine. Id like to see them getting a working movie title on this before gaming companies even attempt to touch it.

I suppose this is nice as a tech concept or some PR for bluray, however I doubt we will see this this on the market in the immediate future. Doubtful all the bluray players out now could use them as is, and other storage formats like HDD and USB flash drives are always growing in size as prices fall.

There have also been other companies hailing how they could hold insane amounts of data like this, like with holographic disks and the 4 TB storage.
