Re: Bruno
SpoilerI don't think stuff like that is really all that bad, I mean, its just a penis. I see one everyday, multiple times. I think the more graphic homosexual actions are what will turn most people off. Such as the "sex scene" with his lover at the beginning of the movie with all the slapstick stuff. And of course the end scene where the two guys make out and grope each other and make out in the caged ring.Spoiler
And let's not forget the scene where he simulates a rather detailed sex act on Milli's ghost while the fortune teller uncomfortably looks on. That's the scene that I lauged the hardest at.

Re: Bruno
I'm really just trying to say that anyone who wants to see this movie should have already know about Cohen and his Borat character. The previews obviously depict a gay character. You should expect that things will get out of hand.
Now I've read some of the spoilers and I can see how things were maybe even more wild than expected, but it seems to me that people were walking out for the things that would be expected from Cohen, no?"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: Bruno
I live here in England at the moment and everyone over here was laughling histerically and no one walked out... now when I was in the states I saw people walking out over Borat.
People walking out are ignorant to Cohens humor... again he is depicting everday people in situations that make them look stupid ie the baby lady.
Now all the gay stuff, what did you really expect for him to do nothing.... I personally found it hilarious throughout.Comment

Re: Bruno
Thanks for defending me guys. Perhaps if I put "The movie sucked", I could have gotten away with it since it would be three words. To elaborate, I feel that it lacked any sort of depth. I thought that the majority of the film was just shock humor without any foundation, which of course can be entertaining to watch but does not make the movie good. To be honest, alot of the shock humor I didn't find genuinelly funny due to the fact that because they mixed in scripted scenes with non scripted, it sort of took the weight away from the unscripted scenes. I loved the Ali G show because for the most part every segment was genuine. Now, I would question even the terrorist segment (which is apparently real) because of the talent agent stuff and all that which was obviously fake. I dunno, I prefer the show over the movies, Borat included. As a piece of cinema, the movie as itself was legitimately bad. Borat was much better from a cinematic standpoint.Comment

Re: Bruno
That's cool. Probably best we don't talk about it as I'm sure it'll just fall into violation of TOS. I didn't mean to bring it up to pull someone into the conversation.

I do agree that a lot of America is uncomfortable with homosexuals and all that, but Bruno hardly encompasses the gay community.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: Bruno
Yea, I got that.
I just meant the people that got up and left. It just seems awkward to me. Do people go to movies without knowing what a movie is about, does this happen often? I'm seriously asking.
If you knew you were sensitive to gay and offensive material, why would you pay to watch Bruno? The previews were obviously showing you how offensive that movie could be.
*Not you. Just people in general.
Regarding this movie specifically (which I haven't seen as of yet), if what I've read here is fairly accurate in terms of what's being presented on film (and I have no reason to doubt that it is), then certainly people have particular expectations based on the trailer they have seen as to the type and quality of comedy that is being delivered. I'm sorry, but the previews DID NOT encompass at all what viewers here are reporting is in the movie. When customers pay their money and then don't get the product they believed was going to be delivered, then they can do whatever they want at any time they want as long as it doesn't disrupt the experience for others. Yet, some will look at those people, and because of this particular theme of this movie, and call them intolerant. Sorry, but that's just hypocracy.Last edited by daflyboys; 07-15-2009, 01:39 PM.Comment

Re: Bruno
A person getting up and walking out of ANYTHING is their communication and statement. It's interesting that some guys here will promote the need for people to be "tolerant", but then don't approve or tolerate someone's actions if they don't agree with a certain practice or principle (the irony of liberalism). There have been many gay schticks throughout comedy history that have been within certain boundaries. In fact, there have been many different types of scenarios throughout film and TV that not only didn't cross over a certain line....and oft times, it was funnier or more suspenseful or more intriguing when they didn't.

I find it unusual because I will take time out of my day to research a film before committing dollars to it. But that's how I'm wired, I guess. I shouldn't expect everyone to do the same and I realize that people don't.
Based on what I saw from Borat, I really don't find it surprising what happens in Bruno. The previews aren't going to show the most offensive material and my thinking was that people would know that. Then again, assuming that people would be aware of things that I would find plenty obvious is bad thinking, just as I'm sure there are situations that others are aware of well before I am.
My opinion on gays and the message I think a film like Bruno is probably trying to send wouldn't fit this board or its TOS (see my previous post to trobinson). So it's difficult for me to really elaborate.
Also, I should point out that while I found Borat to be funny, my opinion of it as a film is that it's horrible. It's definitely designed just for laughs and I can enjoy that when necessary, much like I'll sit back and enjoy the action in Transformers, but that enjoyment doesn't mean I would recommend it as a great film."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: Bruno
I wouldn't really consider Bruno to be typical "gay" behavior though...He's obviously baiting people with over the top antics. I personally have no problems with gay people, but that doesn't mean I want to watch them have sex on the big screen either. SBC's method is similar to the shows like Trading Spouses where they obviously find families/people who clash and turn the dial to 11.
I do agree that a lot of America is uncomfortable with homosexuals and all that, but Bruno hardly encompasses the gay community.
It's over the top. It's meant to create a reaction. It's going to push the envelope.
I agree that just because you may be comfortable with gays does not mean you'd sit in their bedroom and watch. I was merely stating that people should have been aware that the material in Bruno was akin to that analogy.
Now, it's very likely that people just didn't do their research. And I'm wrong for assuming that people do. Actually, I should know better than that especially considering the actions I see people take on a given day.
But if you watched Borat and you know Cohen, then no, I don't agree that you couldn't have known he would push the envelope that far with a gay character. It could surprise you, but I find it hard to believe that anyone that follows him could be completely oblivious to the direction the film would take."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied.
