For me....it's America the Beautiful sung by Ray Charles......seriously gets to me any time I hear it.

I'm confused. Are we talking about songs about America or songs written by Americans?

I'm not sure myself, but it can't be a song that was written by other some one from another country. And I do mean to songs that have something to do with the US, or at least have the word/s US/United States, or speaking about a specific place in the US. But feel free to write whatever you like.

I also like Billy Joel's New York State of Mind. Great atmosphere in this song...

In terms of patriotic songs it's definitely "America the Beautiful". In my opinion it should be the official anthem. At least people can't butcher it as much as "the Star Spangled Banner". Marvin Gaye's version of the anthem is very close to Ray's rendition of "America the Beautiful" IMO.

As for songs that typify America and such. It's hard to say because there are so many different interpretations but i'd say Don Maclean's "American Pie"
