To me nothing signifies America, especially in the South, like The Ballad of Curtis Lowe. Kids never seem to care about the color of skin, if the guy's a drunk, or whatever. To the kid in the song, he's just a guy playing a dubro, and even though Curtis Lowe was just some drunk to everyone else, to the kid he was everything. Even the most insignificant person to you could be the most inspirational to someone else, to me that signifies what America is about better than most "patriotic" songs.

Re: What's the coolest American song?
In terms of patriotic songs it's definitely "America the Beautiful". In my opinion it should be the official anthem. At least people can't butcher it as much as "the Star Spangled Banner". Marvin Gaye's version of the anthem is very close to Ray's rendition of "America the Beautiful" IMO.
As for songs that typify America and such. It's hard to say because there are so many different interpretations but i'd say Don Maclean's "American Pie"
The worst? "God bless the USA" by Lee Greenwood.

First song that came to mind when I opened this thread...
Seriously, greatest music video ever.
EDIT: No matter what any of you ever do, you will never be as cool as "Joe" from that video. Never.Last edited by baumy300; 07-20-2008, 04:58 PM.I post the frog

Yep, water skiing, riding dirt bikes and horse back riding. Doesn't get much more American than that!Last edited by Scottdau; 07-21-2008, 12:38 AM.Comment

Re: What's the coolest American song?
That song doesn't have any lyrics pertaining to America, nor is it even done by a band that's American...so I dunno.Comment

I'm with SPTO. "American Pie" is the best to me.
The worst? "God bless the USA" by Lee Greenwood.

Re: What's the coolest American song?
1. American Pie (song has sentimentality for me)
2. God Bless the U.S.A. (if you ever served I think you get it)
3. R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A. (the Cougar at his finest)Comment
