What has happened to...MTV and The Disney Channel?

This is a "back in the day" rant so bear with me.


So....

Back in the day....

MTV actually showed MUSIC VIDEOS. Not only that, but they had kick *** shows like Headbanger's Ball and some cool series like Liquid Television and Dead at 21.

Now...it's reality show after reality show after reality show with little to no real "music" anywhere on the network. And the music that is on is aimed at 12-14 year old girls.

As for the Disney Channel..much like MTV...they are really NOTHING Disney.

When I was a kid...the Disney Channel actually show Disney Cartoons. Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, etc. Not only that, but they had kick butt kid's shows like a live action Winnie The Pooh series and they showed all of the old Disney movies like Swiss Family Robinson, Davey Crockett, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, etc.

Now...it's nothing but ridiculously cheesy 30 minute shows like Zack and Cody and Hannah Montana.

Honestly, both of these networks should completely rename themselves because in no way, shape, or form do either of these stations represent what they are named.

MTV has been garbage for years now. Like you said, they rarely play videos anymore and when they do the 99% of them suck. I remember back in the day I could watch the top 10 countdown and like just about every song on it, but now I would be lucky if I liked one song on it.

I agree with the Disney rant. They do have Toon Disney though that shows all the old crtoons like Chip N Dales, Darkwing Duck, Ducktales etc. I really would like a somewhat "retro" Disney that aired a lot of stuff that they would broadcast in the 80-early 90's like those movies you mentioned, Mickey Mouse Club reruns and all that other good stuff.

As has been stated, MTV has been on a steady decline. It isn't even as good as it was 10 years ago, and people complained about it then.

Nothing has happened accept that you grew old. New generation of kids/teenagers have a different agenda. Everything changes; technology, music, toys, tv shows, videogames, everything.

Very true.

I don't understand it either, but back in the day you didn't have a cell phone, mp3 player and laptop as a kid.

These TV networks have changed to meet what younger kids are interested in. Nothing you can do about it but shake your head and move on.

The thing with MTV (and I can probably say the same about print magazines/newspapers) is that everything nowadays is heading online. Back then, the tv/radio was all you got, right? So everyone was pretty much forced to use the same methods in which to obtain media.

Now, if you want to get news, you can go to your local newspaper's webpage. If you want to see some music videos by a certain artist, you can go to MTV's website (or youtube, yahoo music, etc). Why not? It's all can be customized to your liking, you don't have to wait 15 minutes on the television just to get to your favorite artist's videos when you can just hit a link online... So all of a sudden, no one is watching MTV anymore... how will they get the revenue? They probably saw the boom of reality TV shows in the past decade and decided to go all out on that... I can't blame MTV for that, I mean how else will they make money (which I'm sure is the goal of these corporations... but all that is a whole new topic).

I agree with you Aub! But, times are a'changing, man! I used to rant how it was better back in the days too, but sometimes you just gotta accept whats new and take advantage of that, rather than moan about the old days in which my never come back.

If I want to see music videos and get exposed to different artists, I have to watch Havoc on Directv's 101. Pretty sad. MTV is terrible garbage these days, My Supersweet 16, Highschool Stories and every thing similar to that makes me want to molotov the MTV headquarters.

MTV only has reality shows that sucks. The Real World has gone downhill, and I don't even follow the Challenges anymore.

I worked with MTV a few years ago and you are right. This was a problem back in 2000. Our reality shows/cartoons were scoring at least TEN TIMES the audience for a "video" block. So everybody who bitches about a lack of videos doesn't understand that people WANT to watch the Real World/Made/Sweet 16 crap.

They'd play videos if people watched.

But yea, Real World a few years back on MTV used to be the ish. Used to be one of my favorite shows, but now, it's gotten so predictable now that can I can't even look it at no more.

MTV sucks, haven't watched it in over 10 years.
