Maybe because Sayid shot him! Ha, I don't know. Maybe he just knew that Sayid's purpose wasn't for the surgery.

Heh, good point. Although personally, if some dude that shot me in the chest thirty years ago and then dissapeared ends up showing up in a plane crash looking exactly the same as he used to, i'd be a little curious

Assuming this is what's going on, Ben has been the leader for at least a decade. He knows of Jacob. He receives orders from him. Ben also hangs out with Alpert. Alpert spoke to Sawyer in 1974.

Ben likely already knew that Oceanic Flight 815 was going to crash. And he probably knew when it was going to happen. He always seemed so passe about it. "Two days after I found out I had a fatal tumor on my spine, a spinal surgeon fell out of the sky. And if that's not proof of God, I don't know what is."

Yet, Ben already had a surgeon.

JACK: I'd be more impressed with you people if you had a good surgeon.

BEN: We had an excellent surgeon, Jack. His name was Ethan.

Contradictions make me believe that Ben already had a hidden agenda. Consider this: If Ben knew that he had a fatal tumor, why didn't he just have Ethan perform the surgery? And why send the one man that you needed to save your life, to look for people on the plane?

Unless, he knew Jack was the one he wanted to perform the surgery and he needed Ethan out of the way.

also remember what one of the others said to Juliet

"you look just like her" referring to why Ben likes Juliet so much, because he has seen her/interacted with her in the past...develops a crush/love for her

which would explain her being recruited to the island, adult Ben trying to act on this

I thought he liked Juliet because she reminds him of his childhood friend Annie, who I think becomes his girlfriend/wife when they are older.

That may be the case.... I was just throwing that out there to support the whole Ben knowing exactly who these people are and what is going to happen because he has already met these people before in 1977... if I were to guess the next few weeks will probably dive in to this more.

Did anyone catch when young Ben was talking to Sayid about his glasses? Sayid asked if it was his dad who did that to his glasses and young Ben said yes and then he said he hated him. Why would he be speaking in the past tense about his father? It isn't until his grown up that he kills his father.

I missed that. But, good catch. Not sure what that could mean unless Ben killed him. Sayid's presence could have altered history and Ben's conflict with his dad (when Ben goes to hand Sayid the sandwich) could have driven Ben to act violently against his dad prior to the Purge.

I may be wrong.. but was it Ben's dad that was in the house the flaming van ran into... I thought maybe it was him that Kate and Jack helped pull out the window.. if that's the case maybe young Ben assumed his father was gonna die/already dead

Yea, reading that previous comment, I'm hoping it's just an assumption if only so that the theory I'm riding stays true. Now Ben just needs to live.

I don't think there's any way that he's dead, they have been pretty firm in the "whatever happened, happened" way of telling the story, the only way I can see any kind of change would come from desmond doing something because he seems to be the time anomaly

The trailer editor is a cunning little guy, though. ABC made it seem like Juliet was going to threaten Kate about Sawyer.

Juliet says: "I didn't know how to tell you without making it seem I was saying to stay away from him."

                              Dun dun! Suspense! Clever.
