Re: What surround system systems you guys currently have?
Speakers: Bower & Wilkins (Front R & L, Rear R & L, Center)
Receiver: Onkyo
Soon I will complete the system with a B&W subwoofer. It's taken 2 years to piece the speaker system together. Bought the Fronts. Then bought the rears. Then bought the center.Twitter

Re: What surround system systems you guys currently have?
I've got 3 extra HDMI cables in the closet, it's just a matter of me getting behind all of my crap and hooking it up. I'm sure I'll hook it up with HDMI at some point.Ahh. You're sound quality will improve greatly by using a HDMI connection (digital video and lossless audio). HDMI cables are less than $3 shipped on Amazon. (Get the 1 cent one with $2.97 shipping) http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...&condition=new
Assuming your surround sound system can accept audio through HDMI.Comment

Gotcha. I love HDMI b/c you don't have a ton of wires everywhere. I went from having a mess to just 3 cables. HDMI from tv to receiver. Then HDMI from blu ray and hd-dvd players to receiver.
Before this I had optical cables, SPDIF cable, component cables, and regular RCA audio cables.Comment

Re: What surround system systems you guys currently have?
Just depends on how discerning of a ear you have. For some, the trade off in not having wires is worth it. (I'd argue you only really dealing with the rear speakers wires) It's just like wired vs. wireless internet. Download speed is almost always gonna be faster with a wired connection.Last edited by GAMEC0CK2002; 05-10-2010, 07:23 PM.Comment

My thoughts exactly. If you absolutely can't have wires, go with a sound bar + sub combo. Or get a 5.1 setup and not use the rear speakers. Most of the work is going to be done by the 3 front speakers and sub anyway.Comment

Re: What surround system systems you guys currently have?
Which H/K did you go with? I'm looking to upgrade my Onkyo 606 and I've been looking at the 2600 and 3600 from H/K.You'll be giving up a considerable amount of sound quality when using wireless speakers. There are several methods for hiding the wires.
Public Service Announcement: Do yourself a favor and get a Harmony remote. The ease of use is worth the investment. Also, loving my Harmon Kardon AVR. Even without a subwoofer, it has my Sony Towers rumbling the apartment at less than half the max volume. The Dark Knight blu ray actually knocked a picture frame off the wall.
And Husker, I hate you. I want some B&W speakers sooooo badly.Jesus saves

Re: What surround system systems you guys currently have?
I got a great deal on an older model, HK AVR 247. Barely used for $150. 50W per channel is plenty for the size of my room. It's driving a pair of Sony SSF-7000 floor towers and BIC America center. Using Polk Audio bookshelfs as rears.
I broke the cardinal rule of matching the center and fronts.

B&W or Klipsch speakers are on the dream list. Along with a 1080p LCD projector.Comment

Re: What surround system systems you guys currently have?
So my Samsung lcd tv crapped out on me and will probably cost more than it's worth to fix. I'm thinking about picking up 42" Panasonic Viera 1080p plasma to replace it. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasoni...&skuId=9761059 It will be mid-July before I will have the money together. Anybody have any comments on the selection?
I'm going into my final year of college so I just want something decent to hold me over until I get a real job in a year or so. I plan on making the plasma my bedroom tv at that point. Also, what would be a cheap, sub $200, theatre system to pick up? (It will go into the bedroom with the plasma as well) I don't need anything great but would not mind a system that makes the audio sound decent. I have a ps3 but know a receiver with hdmi ports is going to cost me a pretty penny. Another thing to keep in mind is that I'm a huge audio person so I definitely notice the quality.Comment

I'd steer clear of any 2009 Panasonic plasmas. They had drastic drops in black levels for a large percentage of buyers and Panasonic didn't nothing for the customers that were affected. So my Samsung lcd tv crapped out on me and will probably cost more than it's worth to fix. Be sure you get a HDTV that has at least 3 HDMI inputs (that's the norm now).
A few suggestions on a shoestring audio budget.

You also have a few RCA and Phillips options at Walmart. Be sure to get a system that has regular wiring and not proprietary stuff...which makes upgrading a pain.
A system like the one above with a real receiver is much better than a DVD player/ limited receiver.
You may want to consider the Sony soundbar and powered sub combo. It has dropped from $300 to $197 on Walmart.com
