Sorry for the Bump, But I'm in the market for a new Home Theater System and wanted to know some thoughts on a good 5.1 or 7.1 system for under 500 dollars

Re: What surround system systems you guys currently have?
I recently bought this Onkyo system from Walmart and I am very happy with it. The speakers sound better than they look and it has more than enough power for my living room.

Re: What surround system systems you guys currently have?
Harman Kardon AVR 354 7.1 system, has 3 hdmi inputs and various optical and component hook ups, using Boston Acoustic bookshelf speakers for front and rear. I bought a refurbished model from Ebay $180, check prices today still going for $200-$400. Only thing I have done to it was upgrade the firmware. This required me buying a $2 cable from Ebay as well. Had all the speakers from previous set ups.
Also have a Panasonic HTIB SC-PT770 5.1 using a Psyclone PSC47 HDMI switch. I really enjoy the wireless surrounds pretty good sound out of this unit for being a HTIB.Last edited by tktnuri; 11-16-2010, 04:55 PM.Comment

Re: What surround system systems you guys currently have?
I have a very high end system, but for the budgets a see tossed around in here, you cant really go wrong with one of the Onkyo HTIBs. Never had a bad experience with them and even though Bose has great marketing....the much cheaper HTIBs are much better with the Onkyo leading the pack usually.Comment

With a $500 budget, I'd go with this for $399 (free shipping, no taxes):

Re: What surround system systems you guys currently have?
So what is the best wattage that should be viewed when looking for a theater system? What is the number that I should be viewing when looking at the Subwoofer and speaker system output? I still like mine but I'm debating a bit on if I need a new receiver and possibly new speakers. Always good to look.......Comment

It honestly depends on the size of your room and how loud you want it to go.Comment

Re: What surround system systems you guys currently have?
Hate to bump an old thread but need some insight from someone here just to get multiple opinions. Im currently looking for a cheap surround sound setup that I can use for bluray movie watching and PS3 gaming, I cant stress cheap enough and am not in a position to grab any of the top of the line setups like Onkyo, Yamaha etc. Let me know if the following setup appears good enough to accomplish this...

I can get it for $150-160 which considering it has 3 HDMI inputs and has barely been used I see no real drawbacks but as usual, I could easily be overlooking something. Ive been told that the PS3 would process the audio codecs that bluray movies provide so whether or not the receiver does isnt important, is this true? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.Comment

Just let the PS3 decode by setting both to LPCM and you'll be good to go for lossless audio. Nice find if you can get it for that price.Comment

Re: What surround system systems you guys currently have?
Looks like a solid choice. The main thing you have to worry about with cheap HTIBs is that they usually use proprietary wires/inputs....which makes upgrading impossible. Luckily the system you linked does not. The only big negative I see is that it has a passive subwoofer (which you won't be able to upgrade).

Re: What surround system systems you guys currently have?
And you won't be able to upgrade because it's basically just another speaker and will use a speaker terminal and speaker wire. Whereas a system that uses a powered sub will have a sub out.
For a smaller room, it probably won't be a big issue.Last edited by GAMEC0CK2002; 10-26-2011, 05:29 PM.Comment

Re: What surround system systems you guys currently have?
Passive as in it does not have it's own power supply. The receiver is responsible for powering itself, the speakers and the sub. A powered sub will have it's own electrical outlet (which means it will have a bigger effect).
