Re: Most Well Known Movie Of All Time?
I was originally going to say Gone with the Wind or Casablanca or It's a Beautiful Life or something, but in the US, it's Star Wars.
I'd go a tossup between Star Wars and Wizard of Oz. Star Wars is probably the movie that's the most identifiable to people.Comment

Re: Most Well Known Movie Of All Time?
ya....the boat sinks!
Before I opened the thread, my first thought was Star Wars, but Wizard of Oz & Casablanca crossed my mind.
Before Star Wars came around, Wizard of Oz was the most anticipated movie each year when it came on TV. My understanding, though, is that it did not have such great popularity when it first came out, nor did it get rave reviews.Comment

Re: Most Well Known Movie Of All Time?
Not quite correct. The movie was beset with a ton of problems. A lot of actors didn't want to be in it or left for various reasons (the best known of which was Buddy Ebsen who was actually cast as the Tin Man but had such a bad reaction to the makeup that he was forced out) and the movie had a lot of directorial problems. In fact, the movie went through FIVE(!) different directors. The movie was hugely popular and MGM even toyed around with the idea of making a sequel but that didn't come to fruition. The main problem was the movie cost an unheard of cost of $2,777,000. It earned only $3,000,000 on its initial release but as well know they recouped all that in spades with future releases, TV and video/DVD.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Most Well Known Movie Of All Time?
Yeah, it's completely iconic... beyond being the first notable color motion picture, it's become such a cultural symbol. That's why I said 'no contest' -- most little kids have seen it, 99% of people over age 65 have seen it, and pretty much everyone in-between has at least seen parts or know the basic story/characters...
The basic story, the phrase "follow the Yellow Brick Road", "there's no place like home", "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", ruby slippers... no contest. Iconic is the only word to describe that movie, and I think it's the only one that has endured and been shared from generation to generation at such a high rate because it also has appeal for children. Nobody is showing their kids "Casablanca".
"Gone With the Wind" and "Casablanca" were huge and iconic for their generation, but I think that if you surveyed the under-40 population that maybe 30% have seen both films (only "Casablanca" for me, I'm 23). Add in the sort of timeless appeal of The Wizard of Oz (fantasy setting, transition from b/w to color, the songs), and I don't see it ever being eclipsed...Last edited by Stumbleweed; 11-13-2008, 06:27 PM.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment
