Well, they're worth the money alone for vacation purposes. This year we went down to Orlando, and it made EVERYTHING easier. Want to go to a certain steakhouse? Type it in, and listed below will be the closest location. It can also help you avoid toll roads and such. Just a handy thing to have all around unless you don't travel much. Ofcourse I don't use it to go to the grocery store.

Reading a road atlas while driving isn't very safe. Listening to a voice tell you when and where to turn is.

Knowing where the near gas station, police station, hospital, eating joint, etc. is in an unknown town with a road atlas is hard to do. To each his own I guess..

Yeah, my week in LA in October made me realize how nice it'd be. Yeah, I had maps, but pulling over, unfolding my map, figuring out where I am, etc just was a pain. I figure if I pick up a GPS it'll be good for years.

            Indeed.
to me getting there is part of the fun. A GPS seems so clinical and detached.

Just depends on the situation...driving around a foreign (to me) city lost when you're supposed to pick up your friend from somewhere isn't quite as "part of the fun"...Sure, I figured it out, but it'd be nice to have something easier than a map. Not like you're forced to use it all the time, just nice to have when you want it.

Even here, I don't necessarily know all the restaurants around a certain area, so it'd be nice to have that available when friends and I are like "Let's go out to eat" after a movie or something.

I can understand the disdain for technology though...I'm surprised you're even posting on this forum using a newfangled computer

My "magic box" does come in handy here and there.

and the only GPS you need in glandale/phx is a piece of grid paper.

In day to day life, yeah. I guess I more see it as something that'll be useful once in a while when I need it normally, and then 3-4 times a year when I travel it'll be worth it in spades.

I am a "tech guy" though...I usually listen to my iPod in the car, use it to watch movies on the plane, etc. I can see how some might not want this type of thing.

I'm not sure what the other ones on sale are elsewhere and if it's worth it for the more expensive one or not (there are a few in the 100-200 dollar range...)

FYI, Sams Club has a 750 for $198.99 online today and tomorrow and in store on Friday.

I went with the nuvi 350 from Walmart online for $148.

I've had personal experience with it and it's a solid choice.

To me, getting there in a timely manner and as quickly as possible is important to me. Nothing worse than being lost on vacation 1,500 miles from home.

I like to know I can pack the family up in the car, type in my destination. And a few seconds later it calculates my route and tells me my arrival time. Sure..back in the 80's we used roadmaps. But I sure do love my modern technology.

I may pull the trigger on this later tonight...gotta think, but 100 less you get pretty much the other ones without traffic, bluetooth, and it is a smaller screen.

                            Re: Garmin GPS

I've been on a Nuvi 260 - it was the cheapest model at the time with Text to Speech.

I had owned 3 cars with in Dash Nav units... these portable units are just as good. Sometimes it doesn't track AS fast as the in dash, but it's pretty close. Now the units in the 400-600 price range DESTROY anything you can get In Dash. You can do so much more with them and take them from car to car. It's amazing the dealerships jack the price of a car up $2,000 for a car with nav, but spend 500 bucks and you get more versatility with a portable than in dash.

                            How so?
The maps are a heck of a lot cheaper for the portable units. Most of the car companies want 150-300 bucks for a Disc since it also updates the User Interface (in some instances).

The portable units have other things like Currency Calculators, Language, etc - things that are quite useful that you don't get with a car.

                            Back on Track

My brother has Magellan GPS. His is pretty high end. It's a $500 unit. Has live traffic updates, etc. What I don't understand is why he got that unit when he doesn't travel any where with high amounts of traffic. It's amusing.

So anyone looking for a unit... I can safely say that Garmin and Magellan are good units. I still prefer my Garmin though.
