Yikes, my new TV is too Hidef.

I bought a new LG 52" 1080P LCD with 120Hz refresh rate. The picture is amazing for sports and nature stuff like the Discovery channel and National geographic. Sports, action and video games look fantastic with no blurring because of the higher refresh rate. One problem though, the TV is so sharp and 3 dimensional that movies and shows like CSI and Dexter look like they are straight out of a soap opera set because of the depth of the picture.

Bluray movies like the new Raiders movie are laughable to watch because if thier are any questionable CGI scenes all it's shortcomings are painfully obvious. Even some scenes in Batman Begins show this. Don't get me wrong some of the outside scenes are mind bogglingly beautiful but some indoor scenes and some CGI look so phony that it almost takes you out of the movie. In some movies it's obvious they are on a set when it's supposed to be a an outdoor scene. In other words the TV is so good it's bad. Even regular DVD's exhibit this depth. I won't even bother with Bluray reviews anymore for picture quality, every friggin Bluray I have looks the same which is incredible where I feel like they're in the room with me.

I like the film like feel to a movie that I had with my old CRT TV. I played around with the cinema mode(which shows movies at the same frame rate that movies are shot in: i.e. 24 FPS. and it's helped a little but it still looks too 3 dimensional. I still feel it looks like I'm watching the Young and the Restless at times.

I just want my cake and eat it too. I want what this TV gives me for sports and PS3 games but still want my movies to look like movies. So I need help, any of you guys have the same kind of problem with your TV and what have you done to help watching movies the way they should be viewed. Or am I out of luck and when the Dark Knight comes out on Bluray I should rename it the Dark Knight and the Restless.

Re: Yikes, my new TV is too Hidef.

That is what is slowing down for me to get a 120 Hz tv. I watched POTC on my friend Samsung and parts of when the monster would come out and swallow the pirate ships it would look fake.

Isn't there a way to turn off the feature that make it look 3d? Its hard for me to explain, but it just takes away a movies tone or luster, it doesn't feel like a movie when I'm watching it.

I still want one though. Watching sports and video games on it is just too good on those tvs.

You can change from 60 Hz to 120 Hz on most any 120 Hz TV that I know of. In fact, I know that the Samsung models have low, medium, high, and auto settings. Not sure what that means exactly for it to be low versus for it to be high, but whatever.

You can turn the Tru-Motion feature off and that will fix the problem you're having. I did the same on my 42" LG.

I thought this thread was going to be about watching HD porn.

              Best advice here.

My parents bought a new TV, and i went over to their house to help hook it up. It looks AMAZING, but the refresh makes the action scenes look almost too smooth. No way i could deal with that if it was my TV

Thank you sir, this worked like a charm, now my movies look like movies. I didn't realize there was an option to turn off Tru-motion so now I turn it on only for sports, gaming and stuff that is digitally shot like Letterman, Leno, HDNet, CGI movies like Shrek etc..., everything else is off. It will stay on for porn though.

Only problem though, and I don't know if other TV's have the same problem. I can't save the option under settings for tru-motion. So if you like to channel surf and are watching football with Tru-motion on, then switch to a movie you have to go into settings and turn it off and vice versa. All the picture modes that I saved have to have Tru-motion either all on or off, you can't have it off for cinema mode and have it on for sports mode with one press of the button so that's a bit of a pain because I like to channel surf.

Anybody have the same problem with your TV and tell me what I can do so I can fix it with one press of a button because the TV manual is vague as usual.

Some movies just shouldn't be in Hi Def. I remember watching the new King Kong....Umm, welcome to the cheese factory. The special effects looked more like Land of the Lost dinosaurs than a blockbuster movie.

I never got why people loved the special effects in that movie in the first place. They looked extremely fake when I saw it in the theater.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

First thought in my mind. Only reason I opened the thread.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
