Somebody explain why its so great?

The reasons are many.

All top notch - Acting, Directing, Special Effects, Sound Track, Cinematography, Screenplay with intelligent and thought provoking dialog, a great look at American history. One of the best movie ever made. Now Dumb and Dumber is funny, maybe the funniest movie I have ever seen but come on now.

Neither of these films come to mind when I think of all-time great movies. Forrest Gump is the better movie, though.

Yes the movie was well shoot and looked good, Zemeckis’ best, thu that’s not saying alot.
The special effects? Inserting Hanks into old footage? I saw the same done 11 yrs earlier in The Right Stuff, so I remain unimpressed.<O</O
But really the story served no real purpose but to tie together one, possibly, historical vignette to the next, all those without context or background, with Gumps simple minded colloquialism in between.
In fact the more I think about Gump the less I like it.

Forrest Gump. One of the best movies of all time. Dumb and Dumber cant touch it. I really thought Dumb and Dumber was exactly what its title states...Dumb and Dumber. Of course I though Napolian Dynamite was the worst movie in history but lots of people love it.

Dang it. I smelled upset.

FG is great and everything.

But Dumb and Dumber (my nomination, THANK YOU) is my greatest movie of all time. I have watched it 100+ times and laugh every time.

We landed on the moon!

Yes. a simple man that won a championship in college football, saved his platoon in nam single handedly, spoke to the crowds protesting at the mall, went to closed china with nixon and played ping pong, jogged across country, and became a millionaire shrimp fisherman.
Its like a Norman Rockwell painting.

I'm surprised the voting has been so close. The only way I'd vote a comedy over a drama is if the comedy expanded the genre or was groundbreaking. Dumb and Dumber was neither of those things.

Theres the rub.
Why doesnt an equally good comedy get the respect of a drama? or any other genre?
Especially seeing that comedys are rarer and apparently, harder to make?

I feel the same way about comedies. Laughter is the universal language yet we need dramas and love stories to define our great movie achievements
