OS Movie Madness rd1 DEPARTED v UNFORGIVEN

    6. Departed - "Im gonna go have a smoke right now. You want a smoke? You dont smoke, do ya, right? What are ya, one of those fitness freaks, huh? Go f**k yourself"

    versus

    11. Unforgive - "You just shot an unarmed man" - He should have armed himself if hes gonna decorate his saloon with my friend"

FYI: Due to christmas I wont be putting up the final rd 1 polls next week.
    74
    Departed
    0%
    42
    Unforgiven
    0%
    32

    The poll is expired.

    The Departed.

I absolutely loved that movie. It's easily in my top five all-time.

Great cast and Scorcese's best job directing ever in my opinion.

Unforgiven with out a doubt. Departed is 'flavor of the month'. In 10 years Unforgiven will still be one of the greatest westerns ever made, departed will be forgotten.

        Unforgiven.

Departed was good, but it was also a remake and it's Scorsese's 3rd-best mob movie for me.

Departed was great, but it's a remake. Unforgiven was incredible all the way around, but because of how gripping Departed is, I have to still give it a slight nudge over the top.

LOL. You made this same post in the T2 v. NCFOM thread.

The Departed is great, but Unforgiven is freakin' badass all around.

'cause it true. And that may be the nature of the beast in polls like these, but that doesnt mean I have to like it or not point out the truth.

Theres a few things I would have done different now that Ive started this thing and 1 of them would have been excluding movies that lack a 'historic prespective'.

Come on, how many people go around still blabbing about T2? Terminator 1 - most likely, but T2? Nah. Historic perspective is just as subjective as anything else.

I went with Unforgiven too, but just because you like one movie over another doesn't mean that the movie you don't prefer will be "forgotten". Unforgiven may be one of the greatest westerns every made but Terminator 2, WILL NOT have everybody still talking in 10 years.

All I can say is; Lets do a poll in 17 years and see if Departed is on it.
I get the feeling it wont.

                          Depends on the poll.

Seeing has how Scorcese is widely considered to be in the top three directors of the past 20 years and this movie is, again, widely considered to be one of his best accomplishments as a director (and his only Oscar in that category), then I would beg to differ.

I think, and probably a lot of people agree, that his oscar was 'posthumous' for his other works that were passed over, And this wouldnt be a first for the academy either.

And it does depend on the poll, but never-the-less its been 17 yrs and T2 is on this poll, and I just watched it again on 'judgement day' 8/29/08 in a sold out theater in DC. I can say for a fact that Departed in 17 yrs wont sell out a theater.

I've heard that argument and I won't disagree that it happens, but I appreciated the direction in The Departed more than I did most of his other movies save Gangs of New York (I think he was robbed with that one).

That's not to say that I don't think Goodfellas wasn't a better movie, but the direction in The Departed was arguably his best, in my opinion of course.

On the same token, I don't think Unforgiven was Eastwood's best directing effort (although a very good movie). That award goes to Mystic River.
