I have to ask, what in the world is the deal with the Herman Edwards segment? They're going team-by-team and having him give a fake locker room speech for each of them? What?!

I just feel time has passed me by in terms of cable and sports channels. I've been watching Sportscenter for about 40 minutes so far (from 10-10:40) and I haven't seen a single baseball highlight from last night. I went to ESPN.com just to verify that it wasn't some kind of strange off-day last night. Right now I'm watching Marcellus Wiley commentate a Lions-Packers game from a year ago with dynamite drop-ins like, "In the air, over the shoulder, good catch." Excellent, I'm glad we're reviewing this year old contest. It's been a real eye-opener.

Is there a place on cable TV that still offers highlights, news, and results from games that occurred the night previous? I know FSN's Final Score did a good job, but they don't seem to air very often. It doesn't seem this cable (or my family's cable) has access to ESPNEWS. I don't like being the guy that says things like, "Back in my day" or "Shows these days. . ." but my god, what is happening?
ESPN has been like this for awhile. No highlights, just gimmicks, stupid segmants, and twitter-overload.

As Matrix said league-specific channels are much better then ESPN.

I only watch ESPN for broadcasts and documentaries now. Everything else is trash.

I watch ESPN the most, during the college football season. That is when they do their best work. Outside of that, I would rather watch the NFL network or NBATV.

Outside of the CFB season, I only tune in for certain games.

I'm even out on Sportscenter. It's about whatever big name athlete (tiger woods, Lebron, etc.) is headlining that day or night. I miss the old school SportsCenter that just gave highlights and commentary.

ESPN does have the web going for them. They do it similar with the headlining athletes and teams, but I also have the option to click off on the other games.

I think my family has NBATV as a part of their lineup but the house I'm at now does not seem to have those sport-specific channels. However, I do appreciate the times I get to watch NBATV when I'm back home, if only because I know I'll be able to actually see highlights, though I could still do without the lame "breakdowns" where the exchange goes like this:

"And it looks like the Magic really tried to work it inside, Dennis, is that right?"

"Yeah, the Magic really tried to work it inside to Dwight, and you saw the results."

And I do tend to use my computer a lot for highlights on demand, but it's actually a lot more relaxing and convenient to have it unfold before me on a television (not to mention the clear, large picture).

ESPN's goal is to dumb down viewers. And it's working.
You have that backwards. Its goal is not to dumb down viewers, its goal is to obtain ratings. ESPN is dumbing down its content to its target audience. Sad but true.

I agree -- arguing with friends who never missed SC used to be a tough debate -- over the years the info they've recited back to me makes me question their thinking capabilities, lol

So ESPN should now just be called EPN, and MTV should now just be called TV, right?

Anyone remember the days (not too long ago either, maybe five or six years ago) when they would show the sports game highlights, and during a particular play they would label it a Top Ten nominee before actually showing the Top Ten at the end of the SC episode? Now you hardly even see a single one of the plays before the Top Ten segment itself. That's how distant they've come with highlights... they don't even show the best plays of the night during the first 55 minutes of their broadcast.

Re: ESPN is now dead to me!

The problem is that ESPN is such a juggernaut in sports, no one even tries anymore.

My main problem with ESPN is that they essentially tried to destroy Syracuse Basketball with little evidence and a few untrustworthy "victims". They got caught with their pants around their ankles when the PSU story broke and they tried to make up for it with that BS story. I feel that if anyone looks at the amount of Evidence against Fine that you would determine that he never touched any of these guys. After the Fine Civil suit got thrown out, you simply cannot say that ESPN was right in calling Bernie Fine a Pedophile.

The whole was a desperate act to stay relevant in breaking major sports news because YAHOO is killing them.

I keep hoping NBC Sports can do something, but they are busy with the Tour De France. I will admit that I like the premise of the NFL 32 show, because right now the NFLN is unwatchable how many Top 10 shows are there? There literally is nothing on NFLN except for the hours of NFL Total Access at 7 pm and then that it is. This time of year sucks. The O's are sliding back, and there is no football on.....

Even the SVP show sucks right now.

And of course that's how Mike Leach got fired.

Another thing about ESPN: They focus more on sports they have the rights to broadcast the events for. Hockey isn't on ESPN at all. The Stanley Cup is a footnote, and baseball is considered a sidestory to the NBA and NFL offseasons and minicamps.

I just really watch Comcast Sportsnet. Glad my local channel fills my sports needs. ESPN I rarely watch when their is absolutely nothing else on, when I'm at a sports bar and it's only thing on TV but I can't hear anyways but then wait to see top ten plays or when a game I care about it on there. Other then that it lost it's appeal to me along time ago.
