Chase is 100% correct in saying that no one's really figured out how to profit online like the print subscriptions would pay in the past. We're in the midst of a new frontier, similar to the writers strike for DVD and online money. Journalism won't die, but it'll just have growing pains as things evolve and change. We'll never lose people who dig for stories and report on news....we just need to adjust how they make their money.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

For those that listen to 1UP Yours:
1UP Yours Classic Reunion Coming Tuesday
Before I get to the next stuff, there's something I didn't want to jinx, or presume would happen, or really do much of anything that could cause some sort of karmic reaction to stop it from happening that now that it's here I'm so stoked to share. Tomorrow John, Luke, Shane, Andrew, and I are sitting down in the studio and busting out a 1UP Yours classic cast reunion show. If that wasn't reason enough to get excited about the prospects for the show we've got NPDs, and not just any NPD's, December NPDs, and Luke's leading the whole news segment just like back in the day. To answer your next question, I'll engineer the show Tuesday (we're off Monday for the holiday) with the plan being to have it out by the end of the day.
That gives us at least one show next week, now on to what comes next. Yes, we're going to do a new show. The cast will be John, David, and I with a fourth chair. We'll try folks out for a while to see who that winds up being based on how well things click. For the content I aim to bring the show back to a more community-based focus. And it's going to be shorter: we're lopping off the third segment. In its place, the second segment will be a place for us to bring the conversations you are having out there about whatever it may be -- games, reviews, some new trailer, you name it -- into the show. Of course, the first segment stays Whatcha Been Playin?Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: EGM is done, no more 1up show either
Print media was availible to more people though. The cost to have a computer and internet and all the subscription costs will further stratify who gets to read the news and who doesn't. Higher education is a highly expensive enterprise....I guess same as it ever was but it was always nice paying 50 cents for a newspaper.Comment

Re: EGM is done, no more 1up show either
Being in the printing industry for 12 years now and seeing all the data, polls etc.. Print media still has their place and it is still far more wanted than online media and it's not really close at this time.Print media was availible to more people though. The cost to have a computer and internet and all the subscription costs will further stratify who gets to read the news and who doesn't. We've also lost a few accounts and for the most part it's because:
1:Catalog Sales are down for the companies. So whether the ads are on online or print has no bearing. As for magazines the amount of ads being sold have reduced significantly. Those companies that have survived have done so with layoffs and mainly lower signatures being printed as well as page counts.
2: The main reasons are the cost of paper especially coated paper has increased a significant amount and print industry is significantly dependent on petroleum based ingredients and we all know how petroleum prices for a great while have been out there.
For the most part print companies are doing their best to reduce cost internally to help with pricing. Unfortunetly reducing jobs also were part of the fix.
There is no quick fix other than weathering the storm and praying the economy turns aroun before more companies have to fold.Last edited by Skyboxer; 01-19-2009, 09:44 AM.Joshua:

Re: EGM is done, no more 1up show either
I much more prefer magazines/newspapers to reading stories online. My eyes just can't stay focused on a screen for extended periods of time. A magazine on my couch is sweet.
I'm 37 and love to get my Newsweek, Blender, and formerly EGM in my mail.
I also get my "fix" news online. Quick little pieces of this or that, but I almost always read full stories from other mediums than my Apple.Comment

Re: EGM is done, no more 1up show either
EGM has sucked for years anyway. They jumped the shark when they changed their format around 2003, and have since gotten rid of their number rating system and instead went the gamepro route with letter grades, lol. They just flat out gave up.Comment

I really wish they would keep the name. Garnett is still working for 1up, John and Luke both left on their own, and even though Shane was laid off he was leaving anyway.follow me on twitter: www.twitter.com/eton_riflesComment

Re: EGM is done, no more 1up show either
I hope they bring in a new group of young adults that have fresh ideas, relentless enthusiasm, and a lack of conformity to the status quo. Just like the original gang did many years ago.
Best of luck to Steve and to EGM, I can't wait to re-subscribe!Comment
