Re: Your Most Overrated. Movie. Ever.

I think a lot of what makes people think a movie is overrated is the hype itself. I know that I watched the Godfather trilogies for the first time at the age of 28 (I'm 31) and they were great. But on the opposite end, I watched Ferris Bueller last year for the first time and didn't understand it. YEARS of people telling me that I HAD to watch this movie and by the time it got to me, it didn't do much for me. I loved the Breakfast Club, but I don't know if it's because I grew up with that movie or because I just like that movie better than the other...

American Pie was basically ruined for me by people quoting it for two weeks before I finally went to the theater. I would've liked it more without expecting so much.
The line must be drawn HERE! This far, no further!

That's very true. Sometimes movies get built up so much that it really doesn't matter how good it is because by the time you see it you are already over the hype and will prob not enjoy as if you just walking in off the street and saw it with no pre-conceptions.

You serious? 300 gets quoted all the time, people rave about, people list it as their fav movie etc etc etc. I actually liked the movie and bought it on dvd but it was massively overrated imo.

Your pick got me wondering why you would pay hard earned money to see the 2nd and 3rd LOTR movies at the theatre if you thought the first one was boring and overrated? I thought the LOTR trilogy lived up the hype quite well and i was happily surprised with just how good a job Peter Jackson did with it....

I'm assuming he either got in for free (a friend working at the movies, perhaps) or he was "dragged" by his friends because that is what they wanted to see and he wanted to go out with them.

It seems like this thread is starting to turn into "what movies you don't like".
You don't remember the INSANE buzz about it a couple of years back with everyone acting like it was revolutonary?

That's it right there. I knew I had something that people gave awards to that I thought was utterly awful. For me, thread over. I hope I never see another frame of that series, and I love swords and sorcery.

The Lion King counts as a "recent Disney movie"? Really?

I agree though, that a lot of the Disney movies are very overrated...but the Lion King is not one of them.

Even the thread for 300 here was a big slob-job, IIRC.

Yeah...don't think I'd put "The Happening" or "Quarantine" up there as overrated movies, mainly because I didn't know they were rated highly.

Peter Jackson's King Kong. Way too long winded, really bad acting by most of the actors, side plots that went nowhere, many laughable CGI scenes and the only movie that bored me because there was too much mindless action on the island. Kong fighting TRex's for 20 minutes is a little overdoing it and it was almost as long as Kong with the airplanes. How long does it take to shoot a big ape? Almost as bad as the endless finales on Return of the King.

Most moviegoers seem to agree as it performed way under expectations at the box office but critics still had the LOTR (another incredibly overrated homoerotic trilogy) erections so they praised the movie as the best adventure ever when it was a colossal bore and tried to make excuses why no one wanted to see it in the theater. I've never wanted a movie to end so much watching it. It was 3 hours but felt like 30.

The funny part is I think the best part of the movie was a part they ended up cutting out. The extended scene on the DVD with the water monster in the swamp was actually pretty cool and suspenseful and they should of kept that in and cut that goofy brontosaurus scene.

                              Napoleon Dynamite

I got this used at Blockbuster because everyone was like "ZOMG this is the best movie ever", and when I watched it I was like "eh, it's kinda funny at times"...Definitely not something I'd want to watch over and over, that's for sure. I guess with the hype I expected better.

Superbad was hyped and well worth it, so I know some movies can live up to the hype.

I had completely forgotten about King Kong. Very good choice.

Napoleon Dynamite is another good choice.
