Napoleon Dynamite

I got this used at Blockbuster because everyone was like "ZOMG this is the best movie ever", and when I watched it I was like "eh, it's kinda funny at times"...Definitely not something I'd want to watch over and over, that's for sure. I guess with the hype I expected better.

Superbad was hyped and well worth it, so I know some movies can live up to the hype.

I had completely forgotten about King Kong. Very good choice.

Napoleon Dynamite is another good choice.

Napoleon Dynamite depresses me for some reason. Maybe its the music or the characters I don't know but when I watch it, I get depressed. I usually don't watch it past the first 20 minutes or so.

Napolean Dynomite, that movie is ****ing awful. I did not laugh at a single scene/joke/anything during the entire movie. I just sat there stone faced for an hour and a half waiting for something funny to happen. I literally cannot believe that anyone on this planet finds that movie funny.

Add me to this list. Napoleon Dynamite is without a doubt the worst movie I have ever seen. I think I laughed once or twice the entire movie. Don't get me wrong, I actually like Jon Heder and find a lot of his movies to be entertaining, but Napoleon Dynamite was just pure, unfiltered ****. The film used to make this movie could have done something good, like a hemorrhoids documentary, and it would have been better than that movie.

The characters are overrated and just not funny. Anyone who was actually stupid enough to buy a Vote for Pedro tshirt should be chemically castrated, as to prevent the Mike Judge prophecy that was Idiocracy from coming true, as they are the first steps towards our demise. Words cannot describe just how bad this movie truly was, unless they are words of self defense in explaining why you beat the morons who constantly quoted this movie to death with your shoe. Just because something is low budget doesn't mean it's good, I fear those who found this movie to be good are mindless drones who were systematically brainwashed to do whatever MTV said.

Well, caring what college kids feel about the movie is pretty important since they're the ones who brought it to borderline cult status. You feel it was never rated highly to begin with just basing it off critic reviews and RT. The demographic who was obsessed with ND isn't gonna be posting on Rotten Tomatoes.

Just the demographic thats obsessed with N.D. isnt big enough to get it overrated. And it seems like the movies 'popularity' has dropped off percipitously.

I strongly disagree with that, we are talking about the 16-21 year old age group here. How is it any different from the film dweebs at RT who give some movie 90% of America has never heard of a perfect rating? Just because RT gives you a tangible rating?

I don't care about reviewers really, especially when it comes to comedies. I personally find Super Troopers to be hilarious, yet it gets a 36% on RT...

Well in this context, overrated, overhyped, and most talked about are really the same thing. Generally speaking, a movie that is rated highly will get a fair amount of hype and be talked about a lot, so the terms are more or less interchangeable in this argument.

Now as it applies to ND, this movie actually received a fair amount of critical acclaim, from both the popcorn crowd and the (albeit slightly) more reliable professional reviewing crowd. At the MTV Movie Awards (we can't forget MTV bought the distribution rights to this film) proclaimed it to be the Movie of the Year. Usually MTV is crap, but at least prior to that their movie awards served as awards for the popcorn crowd, giving movies that the masses liked more credit than say the Oscars ever would. It was because of this acclaim from both circles I went into this movie expecting a lot, no whereas that may have been my downfall, nonetheless I found this movie to be complete crap. The characters had no development, the plot was incoherent, and the humor was below subpar, even for an independent film.

To this day I will never understand how this movie became the popular culture hit that it did.

Crazy how many people are saying the Godfather movies. The first two are pretty much cinematic clinics on everything from acting to directing to screenwriting and everything in between. Absolutely monumental films on every level. But to each their own.

I also agree with mgo that Tarantino is wildly overrated (except for Jackie Brown, the only one of his movies I really enjoy). And as long as we're throwing overrated directors out there, Kevin Smith belongs on that list.
