Make one not buggy, and FAST, with minimal space, and let it run programs...and call it good.
Windows 7 is more like what Vista SHOULD have been... Still part of windows, but probably one that most folks would probably want to forget about (like Windows ME hahaha). 7 is pretty much what you mention though, since MS spent some time taking out things that aren't needed within the code... the result is that it's not too buggy compared to Vista, is faster (as in it doesn't need as much RAM as Vista) and it actually runs programs that it should.

Can I upgrade a 32-bit Vista Premium to a 64-bit Windows 7? Or do I have to save my media, format the hard disk and install 64-bit Windows 7 from scratch?

I was on the exact same boat. I tried running the 64 bit upgrade installer on a copy of a 32 bit Vista and it gave me an error saying I had to be currently running a 32 bit OS, even though my CPU's an AMD 64. Had to format and start from scratch.

You cannot upgrade from a 32-bit OS to 64. You need to do a clean install.

So can I do a clean install with the upgrade version that Amazon is selling for $49? I know it's the upgrade version and all but does it just ask for a Vista serial ID but allows a fresh install?

Sorry, I don't know about the limitations of an upgrade version of Windows.

                Source: http://community.winsupersite.com/bl...-upgrades.aspx

Clean install with Windows 7 Upgrade media? What about x64 upgrades?

I've gotten a ton of questions about the Windows 7 retail pricing stuff, as expected. But the number one question, by far, is an oldie but goodie:
"Can I use a Windows 7 Upgrade version to perform a clean install of the OS?"
This is becoming particularly antsy for people because they want to take advantage of the time-limited Windows 7 presale, which starts tomorrow.
So, what the heck, I asked.
The answer, I'm told, is ... Yes. You can perform a clean install of Windows 7 with the Upgrade media, as you could with Windows Vista.
The second most common questions regards "upgrading" from Windows Vista or XP (32-bit) to a 64-bit version of Windows 7. (You cannot do an in-place upgrade between 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows.)
Yes, it's possible. The key is to purchase the Windows 7 Upgrade version electronically (preferably through the presale and directly from Microsoft). If you do so, you're given the choice to download the x64 bits. So if you qualify for a Windows 7 upgrade--i.e. you own Windows XP or Vista--you can buy the Windows 7 Upgrade version of your choice, download the x64 version, burn it to disc, and do a clean install. (Per the previous question.)
                Hope this helps.

I'd rather just buy the CD. Am I missing something or is there some advantage to downloading and burning it onto disc??

It's talking about if you're going from the 32-bit version of Vista to the 64-bit version of Windows 7. If you aren't doing that, you don't need to worry.

That is what I'm doing but I just planned on formatting my C: drive and installing the Windows 7 upgrade from the CD that I got from amazon. I guess I just don't see why I would need to download it from a vendor and burn it myself. What's the difference?

I don't have a clue. I've been trying to figure out why you can't upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit for the last month or two and haven't been able to figure it out.

I wouldn't think there is one. 64-bit download and disc will be identical. Just choose whichever one you want.

There shouldn't be a difference between a DL and burn to disk and a windows DVD. The DVD cases that you buy in the store or online come with both 32 and 64-bit version.

If I were you Odogg, I'd go over to that blog and leave my questions. He said specifically that the key to do it is by buying it electronically.

i've been running the rc for a couple of weeks now (i know, i know, i'm late), and i absolutely love it. it's neck and neck with osx leopard. the key is going to be how the oses handle multi-core systems.
