I loved grandma's boy, though I don't think it's underrated. It gets a lot of love from the indie guys, that's how I initially heard of it.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

The best performance of Jonny Depp's career, the script ripped almost directly from Hunter Thomspon's writings, Terry Gilliam's crazy cinematography, Gary Busey, Flea... this movie has it all. Seriously though, it's my favorite movie i nthe world and was totally panned by critics when it was released. All the HST-ophiles who have popped up since his death obviously have brought it back a bit, but it was never on anyone's radar when it was released.

And Depp's performance is just insane -- if you know anyhting about Hunter and the way he acted, talked, walked, etc... Jonny absolutely nailed it. HST hanging out with Jonny a lot (he was one of his closest friends by the time he died) in the final years of his life spoke to that. Fat BEnicio is awesome as well -- he did a great job capturing the essence of Oscar Acosta, though we're left to speculate on a lot of the mannerisms, etc. because there isn't much public record of Oscar still available.

You might get alot of people arguing that these ones are overrated but I doubt underrated. That's like saying the Godfather is underrated.

They are looked at it like that now, but when they came out they were panned badly, and performed poorly in theatres. Fight Club was labeled as a "homoerotic, nihilistic rant" and BladeRunner was a "slow, Ridley Scott ego project that everyone hated working on."

People didn't realize what they had until the moves were long out of theatres. In both cases, I think they are great films, and never should have been blasted that way in the first place.

I agree w/ 25th Hour. I'm not the biggest Spike Lee fan, but that and Inside Man were great.

I also agree with Slingblade. Not because people don't think it's good, just beacuse I watched it again the other day for the first time in 5 years and forgot how good it was.

                I'll also add The Professional

The Professional is crap compared to the international cut which is titled Leon: The Professional. There's a huge distinction there IMO.

Excellent choice. Defending Your Life is a great, great movie.

I'll add Night Falls on Manhattan. Andy Garcia, Richard Dreyfuss, Lena Olin, Ian Holm, and James Gandolfini -written and directed by Sydney Lumet.

                        Billy Elliot

I don't consider it underrated, because it received great critical acclaim, but it is pretty unknown. And it is a fantastic movie.

Pans Labyrinth - I really loved this movie. And the allegories used were subtle and very well done. I list this movie since I am not to sure a larger audience saw it since it was a Spanish speaking film -

The Butterfly Effect - Ashton Kutcher as main star of the movie but it is very good and powerful IMO and has some good meaning to it.

The Prestige - Chris Nolan directing with Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine acting, very good put together movie.

Half of the films in this thread are better, but even a lot of serious movie fans probably didn't bother with this one. I give much respect to any feel-good movie that doesn't cheat and try to manipulate you to reach that goal.
