I love all of the stuff you mentioned. I'll also throw in Peter Glass on several projects where he's been brilliant. He has a great podcast where he describes his process WITH the piano during the interview, and it's just one of those mindblowing musician moments.

I love Harry Gregson Williams as well. I never get tired of that percussive military propaganda stuff. Can't forget love for the Bourne II score. That was also phenomenal. I put that and the 24 score on when I'm reading or drawing action scripts. Eric Clapton on Lethal Weapon and Rush are "must listen" material as well.

    Honorable mention for Crouching Tiger.

Excalibur has always been powerful to me. I grew up watching the film as a kid and still get the goosebumps during certain parts of the film when the theme starts kicking in.

The Godfather's score is excellent as well. It sums up the atmosphere of the movie with its tone and instrumentation - its not stylized and very traditionally based with its sound but it still has a modern feel to it.

One of the many reasons On Her Majesty's Secret Service(1969) is the best Bond film John Barry's score is absolutely masterful.

                Re: Best Movie Score

Fellowship of the Ring...the fact that Howard Shore wrote in the Gondor theme when Boromir was talking, a theme that wasn't featured theatrically until the third movie, is just fascinating (it was heard partially in the Extended 'The Two Towers'). His score for the "trilogy" was near unsurpassed, and most imporantly, unique.

A lot of the other modern guys, John Williams included, along with the folks who did TDK and Pirates just have too many similar themes. I watch Star Wars, then Indy, then Harry Potter, etc...I KNOW it's John Williams. Sure the melodies are different, but the key is the same. That isn't to say Williams sucks (hell, the haunting "Empire Theme" in the prequels at certain points was awesome), it's just familiar.

Same with Zimmer...his Pirates sound, King Arthur, BB and TDK sounds are all good in their own right, but overall they share a lot of similar qualities.

Back to Howard Shore, did you know he composed 'Gangs of New York' or 'The Departed' based solely on his "sound"? They are all unique pieces and compositions, IMO.

EDIT: And the Godfather film scores are fantastic. No denial here.

I can't believe I forgot about that one. The visuals would not be as intense without Morricone's score.

One of my favorites is Trevor Rabin's (sp?) Titans Spirit, the theme of Remember The Titans.

That song gets me pumped up.
