It has to be unbelievably overcast for me to lose reception. It seems in the summer with those thick cumulonimbus clouds.

I went to Directv 8 eight years ago and have had zero regret or problems.

Make the switch. It is cheaper, move channels, more hd channels, and the quality of picture for me was better than Cox cable. The interface, the memory size of my dvr are all better.

As for the amount of outages, i've had my cable go out more than a year than i've had issues with DirecTV.

I still use cable internet though because nothing can beat it here.

As for Phoenix, there is almost no reason to go to Cable, its just a rip off.

For any dish type reception, the quality will be affected by dense fog, snow, heavy thunderstorms, etc. You may not lose the signal completely, although at times you will for a few minutes, but you will see "blocking" or artifacts as the feed breaks up. Also, at times, the sound can be out of sync with the picture.

I live in CT and have this happen on a fairly frequent basis due to the bad weather we get here, especially in winter. Your quality will depend greatly on where you live.

I live in Boston and we can get pretty bad snow storms and such here. The only worry I really have is signal loss with weather issues, and I'm still undecided.

Moving to DTV was the best choice I ever made, and as far as the weather goes.....I lived in Cleveland where its winter 19 months a year, and I never had any issues at all with reception.

Your reception will deterioate in adverse weather...especially fog and heavy snow. I don't think it is any reason not to get the dish, just be forewarned that weather does play a part time to time.

Re: Making the switch from Comcast to Direct TV

i'd like to add that I do have direct TV, but my monthly bill is 15 dollars more than what my cable bill was. And thats without any premium movie channels.
When your first 3 months are up, you realize how much of a rip off it really is.
Considering I really only watch local channels, nesn, nhl network, versus, and occasionally usa for house repeats, I wish i had cale in my area, because it was alot cheaper, plus you got the on demand crap for free.

When I was selling DTV with my Grandfather, we Discontinued selling Dish because of the problems we kept getting calls about, plus they were filing Bunkruptsy.

I made the switch on Feb 23rd. So far, no major complaints or regrets. I had Time Warner cable. Once you use DTV's interface, you'll begin to see how lazy a complany like Time Warner Cable is with their software. DTV has folders that contain your recordings, so it stays organized. The favorites can be customized, where you can easily switch from channels you get and your picked favorites. You can also set up what looks like a fav 9, where your favorite top 9-10 channels are a button away.

I also managed to get a great deal on MLB Extra innings because of a programming mistake they made in my initial setup. Also, the DTV website is very accessible and easy to use.

Seriously, cable needs to get its act together before I ever think about going back.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

Just thought I'd add...We had a snow storm here in NC last night. DTV was out for the evening. I looked at my wife and she said, "It's not a big deal..."

I said, "Tomorrow is a 2 hour episode of 24, what about then?" She loves 24.

We haven't had a storm like that here in years, so I'm not too concerned. Prior to the storm it rained for one day straight, no issues.

Poor some hot water on it to get rid of the snow stuck on the dish and that should fix it
