Great is a relative term. I was just curious what it was like in reference to other Cameron 3d benchmark's like Terminator 2 3d "ride". I thought that kind of 3d was cool but it gets boring and feels non immersive rather quickly, other people would call something like that great.

Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

re: James Cameron's "Avatar"
Finally saw this in IMAX 3d and, visually, this film blew me away. In terms of story and dialogue it was hokey and, at times, cringe inducing but bearable.
I recommend everyone sees this film...It truly is a landmark moment for cinema.Comment

re: James Cameron's "Avatar"
Why would I search 30 pages of stuff to a specific question when I could just ask it? Asking for a detailed description of what it was like is much different than the "good, great, amazing, blew me away", words which I'm sure were scattered throughout this thread without any sort of detailed comments concerning the technology. Everything is relative, some things more than others. Asking someone to compare this technology to previous 3d benchmarks is much more telling to me than a few generic words.Comment

re: James Cameron's "Avatar"
Can someone explain to me the experience more than the movie. What is the 3d like? Is it like the Terminator 2 3d ride in Universal studios? Is it worse? Is it like a mix between that and the 3d films in the 50's? Or, is it so immersive it actually feels like you are on the planet and its almost indistinguishable? I have an imax theater 15 mintues away and its playing there and I'm trying to see if its worth it, because from the preivews it looks totally not something I would like (the cgi doesnt blow me away at all). Just saw some more previews. Lol that the robot dude from Grandma's boy is in it.
2. I don't know what trailer you saw but this is by far the greatest CGI ever created.
3. To actually try to answer your question...
- it's not gimmicky, 'throw a boulder at your face' 3D like older movies
- it isn't noticeable in every scene
- but is in the very first scene and just shows what this type of 3D actually means to a movie experience in terms of depth and the feeling of immersion and being closer to the characters and environment than ever before
- if you take your glasses off for a minute during the movie, you quickly think 'how the hell did I ever get by watching movies that weren't 3D?' (Well I did anyway)
- it's not just the 3D that wows but the actual exotic planet, characters and animal life they created, it's like it wasn't made up and the actual planet really exists
Meh, I'm done.Comment

1. To even think the feeling of actually being on their planet could be indistinguishable is laughable. Why ask the question?

re: James Cameron's "Avatar"
Movies like Final Destinatin and My Bloody Valentine give 3D a bad name and play into the stereotype that it's going to be stuff flying at your face. I had to convince my friends that Avatar was not like that and it's more about being immersed into the enviroment. I can't believe people are seeing this in 2D. I'd expect maybe old people too, but if you are nerdy enough to be on this website you should know about what's up with Avatar.Comment

re: James Cameron's "Avatar"
I took off my 3D glasses for like 30 seconds while watching it and thought WTF people who watch the movie in 2D are watching a completely different movie. This is the best 3D movie I've ever watched. I hate movies that purposely add things to fly at your face to show you its 3D.Comment

re: James Cameron's "Avatar"
I finally saw this today for the first time and on IMAX 3D. Absolutely epic. Loved every second of it. The movie did everything it was supposed to: wowed me with the visuals, delivered a great story, stirred my emotions, and entertained the hell out of me. Every piece of of recognition this movie has received is well deserved.Last edited by SlimKibbles; 02-27-2010, 08:21 PM.MLB: Cincinnati Reds

In the theater a tough *** couple was seated in my aisle. By the end of the movie the girl was crying in the dudes arms.....with the 3d glasses still on. One of the funniest sights I've seen in a long time.Comment
